Multitracking from song mode?

Just wondering what process you guys are using to track out your beats with. I'm multitracking out from my MPC1000 to Ableton Live 5 via midi clock track by track using track mutes , but what happens when you have your beat in song mode? how do you seperate tracks from there?

you can use the mixer channels to mute tracks, tho it can be a lot of hassle.

I use ableton also and just record each sequence tracks one at a time then arrange them in live after.

depending on how many tracks your using and your soundcard you can use the multiple outs to do this quicker.

Convert your song to a seq and then track it with track mutes.

I'm going to be getting a mixer soon and I'm curious to know why muting channels during recording is a hassle?

What if you have ALOT of mutes and you have to do the mutes LIVE while recording? You might need to move your hands very fast to make the mutes work at the right times and moments. Also, what if you don't catch a mute exactly where you want it, you'll have to start your LIVE MUTE recording session again.

I'm guessing, correct me if I'm wrong.

Me, I just copy the original seq's and edit the mutes IN them, THEN chain seq's together in song mode (2kxl) and the mutes play out automatically. Takes more time to edit the mutes in BUT it's automatic right where I want it. That is what works for me.

That's what I do as well. It makes more sense to me that way.

that's how i work too.

what if you gotta drop a part to coincide with the vocals or something like that? do you plan for all that when you do a final song mode or setup? i think its not always a disadvantge to just use the mutes. you dont have to spend all the time plannin, and its easier than reprogrammin all the sequences if you wanna change somethin you didnt plan for. i normally do a combonation of both.

either in the multitrack or in the sequence used in song mode. i will often add parts on a copy of the sequence if i need something special later, or just delete parts and if i need them i take the copy from elsewhere.

Really flexible way to work.

Co-Sign on copying seq and then editing the copies, I thought thats how everyone did it .

Well, on the 2kXL, I just SOLO each track and then play the song mode, 'cause I track sh!t out ONE track at a time. Takes longer (like 8 times as long), but I get more fine tuing control over each track this way (input levels, a li'l pre-PC EQ, etc)

I just use the 8 outs.
