i was hoping some how we can develop some kind of go to guide made for the effects that work best for groups of instruments............ I know alot of heads have found out by trial and error what effects works on what and what doesnt. example:

Drums:
Strings:
Synths:
bass:
Guitar:
leads:
pads:
brass:

lowcut??? I hope you mean lowPASS!
And don't be fooled, overdrive and lowpass have been the weapons of choice on lowend sounds since what? 1991? :?
Mod-delay on guitar I'd say, but thats even older news ;)

no he could well mean lowcut- you know cutting the ultra lows from your bass so the audible parts are less muddy, cluttered- which doing so can return lost energy back to your track...

producers secret see?

I do that too :P
but thats more or less a technical thing to mix stuff properly and not really something to 'fatten' the sounds. So I thought he was getting at it that way...

i barely use fx.. sometimes a delay or verb on a sample. i keep my drums clean. i use a but chorus on vox and sometimes a litlle bit of quick verb from cep on the entire mix
of course a lot of filtering/eq but i dont see that as an effect

Man effects and filters are a very important aspect of my production. I pride my self on using effects and filters to make something that i composed sound like it was sampled.... I use a combination of telephone filters, Overdrive filters, modulation to get this effect. I also use effects when sampling to. The fantom rack has over 60 standard filters each customizable.

I wont go into too much detail (cause I worked hard to perfect this) but here is a quick response to a question about my track R.O.A.M. You can hear it on my sound click page to get a reference of what im talking about....

ILL Treats wrote:Cool, you played the piano? Then added static? If so thats a good idea you had me fooled.

Peace

LOL yea well actually a little more then that, the piano is from my fantom rack. But yes i played it. To get that sampled, hollow, grimey, sound i used a telephone filter on the the piano voice then added some reverb. Then after that i just added the static...

The eletric gutiar is actually an organ sound that i playled then ran threw the overdrive filter on my Fantom rack. None of this is mixed, its just straight off my fantom,motif,mpc.. and yes i agree the gutiar is a little loud at times..

the Fantom rack is dope for stuff like that. THe filters alone are crazy..

class...

IMO there are no rules for using effects. There's nothing wrong with using a guitar stompbox on a snaredrum if it sounds right to you.

here's what i use sometimes:

Drums: Tape saturation, distortion, Waves Trans-x (i don't know what this is , but it sounds great)

Strings: Nothing. I just mess with the synth untill it sounds good.

Synths: Same

bass: I'll use Nomad's DR-2S a lot. That's a tube/overdrive/limiter. Sometimes i use the efx section of a B4 organ in software form.

Guitar: Nothing, i hate guitar.

leads: Maybe something flexible, like PSP Nitro. I just skip through the presets untill i find one i like.

brass: Just a dash of reverb if needed.

on alot of my lead samples, keys and gtars, i use delays and reverb. Just a little to color and fatten up a sound. On drums i use overdrives, distoritons, and maximizers. On synths i use reverbs and delays according to the sound. And on bass, i use maximizers, and compression. it all depends though on what the sound is telling me to do. its basically trial and error. Just get a basic understanding of all the staple effects, like reverb, delay, chorus, distotion, phase/flange, and then you will know kinda what you want to use for what application.

 Yes I know what Lowpass, Highpass, Lowcut, Highcut, HIgh shelf and lowshelf is...

But think about it, you use those cuts to clean up your mix so you have less layering of frequencies... Thus making space for all the sounds in your mix.
Check some outboard gear, you wouldnt want to cut the very end of your lows with a hipass... those things normally dont go down to 30-50Hz.. so there are differences between a lowcut and a highpass. But technically I know its the same thing.

As I said, I dont really feel this is a thing for producing a beat eventhough I use this for fixing breaks before sampling them into the MP.
Its just more an engineer/mixing thing than stuff beatmakers do.
Not hat it aint good info or something
