Music theory

Im just wondering but how many people that produce have taken music classes or studied music theory and do u think it really helps because i usually learn things by ear and i figured out parts of music theory by just reading stuff on here, what do u guys think????

for classical music its crucial.
i've taken fundamentals which is the first theory class, and im going to take diatonic harmony next. if u r good at math music theory is so much more easier.

When u are communicating with other musicians its important to know the terminology so i guess its useful in that respect

personally i would rather produce classical music then ne thing else

Learning music theory has helped my beats a whole lot. Just learning scales and finding keys has helped me more then I can imagine.

true yet you'll find the music deemed as good often falls into particular structures...the 4/4 time sig being the most obvious- but certain chord seqs, scales etc also- they are not rigid rules but they are there- otherwise songs wouldn't follow already succesful patterns and no one would care about key, scales, harmony etc....

or you could just say define good music....

i say learn it but not to a classical/academic degre- just get an understanding whats happening so you can use the knowldge to step your own game up

I am in a music theory class at my college now. Man it's alot different from just sitting and making beats, but now I got a understand of what I am doing. Before I would just sit down and do it. It has helped some

I've taken a lot of music theory matter of fact im droppin my musicianship
class cuz that shit is hard, but takin it help some. The theory classes are all base on the piano so if that's what your lookin to play your keyboards better then go for it to me usin that theory to make beats it helped very little

ANYTHING you can learn about music will make you a stronger player....take the class if you have time and can afford it. That being said, I got kicked out of school in the 10th grade...music class was the first boot I got....never been back since

It kills me when producers talk about their "music" but dont have a basic understanding of music theory.

Everybody who claims they "make" music should atleast know what F# or C is. Or know what a time signature or key signature is, or the differnce between bass and treble clef....

WHen you get deep into theory.. it becomes very mathmatical espically when you start talking about inverstions, atonel systems, cents etc...

I have been studying theory since i was 8 becasue i am a classical pianist.
With that being said, music theory dosent really make you a better producer. It jus teaches you how to descibe what most talented people already do naturally. Dont expect theory to make your a beats better,only talent and pratice can determine that, but it will give you an understanding of what your doing when creating music. ALso its best to learn theory & and a musical instrament at the same time so you can apply what your learning...

I can say theory comes in handy when making r&B becasue briges in r&B songs usually are the realtive minor of the key signature your in.

Anyway...
I went to school with cats that knew theory out the ass(it was their life), but as soon as u asked them to compose something orginal, they went blank. Theory does not equal talent,theory does equal knowlege....

Yeah i studied theory too.. and your right, i'm not sure that Shoenburg's 12 tone system has come in handy in beat making.....

but i will say this, for some people learning theory gives us a more concrete way to understand music ideas and if need be, explain/ discuss with others and i think that could help anyones music

Having said that, many great musicians did not know any theory and didnt need it. Hendrix didn't know a lick of theory and he managed to inspire some of the heaviest musicians (including Miles....)


in answer to the question... i do not believe that primo knows any music theory.. but he doesn't need to.. making great music does not require it... but i bet his ear and his musicality is so great that he would have no trouble in a theory class..

Yo I took some time off with my beats to focus more on music theory, and I gotta say, it helped enormously..its not something that comes to you right away, it takes time to take a lot of the fundamental concepts, and there is no end in learning of course....but yeah, it helped, and a lot phukkin more than I thought
