Heyall..

Anyone got any tips for getting those Aphex Twin sounding drum crunch's. Kinda hard to explain the exact sound i mean.. there are a fair whack of tracks and artists over the years who have done this.. ive heard "everything but the girl" do it.. squarepusher... to this indie/electro track i just heard on the radio by some fella from oregon (think thats the spelling)..

Im assuming its a plugin or filter of some sort... its sort of like when you pitch up a sample (usually the snare).. ive screwed around with a few things but never really got there?

Does anyone know how to do this?

thanks..

I've wondered how they did it myself. I think it's a snare on loop for the roll and they pitch it up which speeds the roll up as well, but I think it's most likely detailed step editing in a computer.

oh crap.. i was afraid someone would say that... cause i've thought about doing it that way myself and played around with pitching a snare via 16 levels to test the sound on the MPC.. but thats some serious editing on a computer isnt it... i knew it couldnt be that easy otherwise everyone would be doing it.. must be a government secret or something... thanks for the reply..

I still think the looped snare might be it. a lot of those guys are big akai S series users, like S1000 so it could be possible through simpler means.

yeah i might muck around with that idea tonight.. i use a pretty basic cool sequencer on my computer that i'll just make a nice snare roll and apply a simple pitch plugin to it.. see what happens.. might try it more with my MPC too.. every time i hear a new track where somebody has done it i always spend the next 5 days thinking about it...

the s 1000 has multiple loop points ( for each sample ) so that could be it but i think aphex and squarepusher really do extensive use of harmonisers and clocked devices .I'm not sure it's crazy editing , i read an article about autechre drum programming and they said using Max/Msp to randomise midi patterns .

yeah i've heard he makes a lot of his own toys.. but i've heard other people doing it and they cant have all made their own gear surely?? i'd like to think there is a plugin or something to at least help.. maybe im dreaming...

Keep trying different things, process the audio to new sample files and then mangle them some more, then repeat. You're not going to find the exact same sound but you should find your own sound somewhere in the process.

yeah sweet.. might got to town on it tonight... i was hoping there was a shortcut (sometimes there is for some things).. but yeah looks like this one comes down to hardcore experimenting.. which aint all bad...

Aphex doesn't make his own shyt, he may have made some things but that myth isn't as out there as people think.

I think an S1000 and a tracker can do it.

I agree , same thing with lee perry or spector , they just made revolution production wise and there are a lot of stories running around ( does it make sense? , english is hard early in the morning ) .But doing drug is a good start that's for sure !
Btw max is an open environment used to create music or lights apps ( heavily used in contemporary music )

ooomph... IDM with an MPC is kinda hard. Its a lot of work for sure!
I make this kind of music in Reason.
What I do is I program a break/beat and then I devide that 1 bar midi loop in 16 or 32 little pieces (drawing blocks with the pencil in the Reason sequencer) and then Ill arrange them different
Its fun and easy in Reason ..... but if u wanna do this with any mpc other than the 4k... well good luck 2 u but ull need a calculator and lots of spare time :?
FX = automatable delay, cheap verb, distortion & filters.

A computer sequencer is the way to go for IDM stuff

I would practice a lot on a computer and transfer that knowledge to your mpc

also keep your drums short... so with a short sustain & decay and a fast attack ... so they re crispy
