Hi All,

I searched for this but did not find anything related.

I am trying to understand time signature and want to know if I am on the right track.

1/16 This means 1, 16th note in 1 bar

2/16 This means 2, 16th notes in 1bar

4/4 This means 4 beats in 4 bars.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct please.

Thanks

no, the 1/16 is 1 16th note in 16 16ths....yet 4/4 is 4 beats and 4 bars - 4 bars consisting of 4 beats each

ah just realised that thats what you emeant- the comma threw me off...

Hi Greg,

Hope your well.

Thanks for your reply. I am trying to get creative with the time signatures as I have never used this function before.

So if I create a sequence that is in 1/16 time sig it will be 1 16th note long?

Just getting used to this type of thing.

Thanks

yar- i wouldn't bother doing that it will be like one kick drum long

what you wanna do is look into making seqs 4/4 and then changing the sig and chop of bars/beats....basically you can set the mpc to play only a certain front part of a loop if you get the numbers right:

so if you chopped your loop down to 4 beats (1 bar) then change the time sig...

if im remembering rightly if you change a 1 bar loop to say 4/16 time sig it will play just the first beat of that...

means you can loop up the first beat of the bar for that beat-juggling/ stop start effect...

if you wanna mess with different time sigs in terms of actual compsing try writing something in 6/8 or summat...

The top number indicates how many beats per measure. The bottom number indicates what note value equals one beat. For example, 4/4 means 4 beats per measure and the quarter note (4) equals one beats. 3/8 means 3 beats per measure and the eighth note equals one beat.

Thanks for all your input there very helpful

Dub-I have just discovered the tim sig function very handy for those cut up type effects. Also do you ever go on the undergroundhouse.net forum? At the moment there are some J-Jay (san fran) samples on there for download in the studio section.

Ariesmale1- thanks for the info.

Itchyvinyl- Great links there cheers.

Threshed- Thanks for that link.

cheers

Yeah you do have to register but it's worth it for those samples. I made the best beat I have ever made last night using those samples, so get registering!!

is there any way to choose which part to cut?
for example if i make a 1 bar loop which are 4/4 and then change the tsig to 3/4 it will cut the last part, but is it possible to cut lets say the beginning?

if i needed to do that id would just delete the beginning from a copy of the main loop and loop the end part

but to have it start from the beginning run through and then loop between two points away from the start point wont work, you would have to use song mode to chain together 3 seqs- 1 containing the whole beat, 1 with the looped section repeated and 1 with the end of the beat to paste back on once you have finished looping the middle....

so

seq 1 (whole beat or first part of beat)
seq 2 (part of beat you want to loop) x however may times you wanna loop
seq 3 (end of beat)

i'm not sure i understand what you mean...

for example if i make a 2 bar beat where the both bars are 4/4 and there's a drumroll just before the sequence loops, now if i wanted to set the last bar to 3/4 the roll would get cut out... it would be really nice if i could choose where in the bar to cut.. i think it would be a bit similar to recycle where i could cut and rearrange a loop, only the pieces would be limited to the tsigs on the mpc... does it make any sense?

i know i could do this by copying and deleting sounds by selecting the from/to time of the bar (but that's to much numbers for me.... yes i'm lazy  ) i think it would be easier if i could just choose the startpoint of the cut in the tsig menu :P

thanks
