Need Help Recording MPC2000xl to Cubase SX

Hi guys

First off let start by thanking you for posts. It's a great source of information for real begginers like me that have no clue of what they're doing.

Let go through my set-up I'm using a Dell Laptop, Steinberg's MI4 interface, Cubase SX, and 4 channel Beheinger Mixer, and the MPC2000xl.

My question is this

How would i go about....I don't know the termonology....i'll give an example. I record a drum pattern on my mpc. My kick will be track 1 on my MpC my snare on track 2, hit hat on track 3 and so on. How would record that into cubase sx. I want to be able to record them track by track the same way i have them recorded on my mpc. at one time.

The reason i'm trying to do this is so i can add effects do each separte instrument.

Guys I'm really new at this and I really try not bother anyone with any stupid questions. I've searched the forum and I haven't been able to figure this one out on my own. Please help.

There are a few ways to do it but firstly you need to set the MPC to slave to Cubase (Cubase is master). Go into the midi section of the MPC (shift 9) and set the midi in to either MMC or MTC. You will need to set cubase to send MMC or MTC as well. If you choose MTC in the MPC you need to set the same in Cubase. The sync options are at the bottom of the transport options (from memory). If choosing MTC make sure your MPC is set to the same frame rate as Cubase. You can do this in the Project setup section of Cubase.

Open a midi file in cubase make sure it is sending midi to your MPC and record one track at a time. Be sure your MPC is sending midi data to cubase. You will need to set the track to midi and choose a channel to sent it to. EG track 1=kick so set it to Midi channel one. Mute all other tracks press play record on cubase and it should record your kick note data. Make sure the midi track in cubase is set to receive midi data from channel one. Set the midi channel in Cubase to a Drum Map as this is a better visual display for midi recorded drums as opposed to the piano roll.

Myself, I just record all drum data to cubase in one midi track, you don't need more because you can erase notes in there. More tracks doesnt make sense. Then I use cubase to trigger the sounds from the MPC2000xl. You will need to set the MPC track to one that isnt a midi send track so as not to play the sequence from cubase and the MPC. You may to to change the MIDI sync in the MPC to not receive and midi sync. When in this mode you can use the MPC to sample when you are playing the sequencs from Cubase. This is pretty cool me thinks.

I may have missed something but just use the terms and search the manuals and if you got some nouse you will figure it out.
