Now, let me say this first. I have read a "multitude" of articles, tutorials, etc.. on the usage of compression: all of the SOS articles, random stuff found on the net, etc...

What I've noticed is: Nobody ever actually tells you how to put a compressor to use.

They tell you what the various knobs on the compressor do. But never say: when compressing, let's say, a kick drum, start off by decreasing the threshhold. Then, lower the ratio, then...

What I want to know is, when using a compressor to beef up a drum sound, what steps do you take?

Now, I don't expect anyone to get in depth with actual ratios, threshhold levels, etc...

But, if I'm given a compressor with set a default, where do I begin?

P.S.

This post comes out frustration with using presets and loving both my women and my drums thick.

I have a book (somewhat.)I went online and googled compression and with the stuff i've found i've put together my own little "Book".I'm sure it's nowhere close to what Tutor sells but it'll do for now.

It's helped me alot actually because i even found a few freq, harmonic and compression charts.
