Spec sheet wise, yes they had bad conversion compared to today, but back then the chips they used were the height of the technology, they were made in high end operations, there were no cheap A/D fab houses, just lower models from the high end guys, so the quality was high.
Now we have better technology and specs but a lot of that goes to reducing the cost to manufacture a sellable product, not to make the product as high end as possible. We have people making a/d converters in china with god knows what materials and QC. Now if you are compring apogees or whatever thats one thing, but much of what makes it into the products today are made of lesser materials and with less QC and attention to detail than back then, when only the top end was in business.
And if you don't like the sp-1200 sound you can't be a beat god, sorry but that's grounds for disqualification right there. So is liking swizz beats style triton preset drums
