Saturation

Can you guys point me in the direction of some good saturation/compression plugins?

Yeah, me agian, bored at work. Ok, saturation plugins are tough. I have sansamp for protools, and it's OK, but still souns a bit digital. Honestly, the best thing to do is get a 1/2 inch reel to reel and lay stuff to in, then play it back to track into the computer. But, that's very involved, and unless you have smpte output from your computer, it's hard to sync the 2 track to a multitrack computer environment.
I get really good saturation emulation from using those bombfactory LA-2A vintage compressor plugins. Vocals, stereo drum mix, keyboards, everything. I think they are now made by unversal audio, makers of the original compressor back in the day. I do believe you can get this for all major platforms. What software are you using? Are you just sample editing, or are you multitracking?

The Bomb Factory joints are ill. So is Analog Channel. Some people don't have Pro Tools though. Outside of Pro Tools, I've also been using these digitalfish VST/AU plug ins. Love them. And they are free.

Check them out. Also, Camel Phat sounds pretty good too. And so does, Cyanide 2 and Frohmage.

I am just sample editing. I don't record on the computer, i sequence everything in my MPC because I don't have a soundcard yet.

If you have a sample editor that also handle VST plug ins, you should be able to use the plug ins that I mentioned. If you also use MPC Editor or MPCPGMMaker, you can get your sounds nicely back in and out of the MPC.

Once you have the whole track down what do you then. like what is the right order.

do you normalize, saturate and then compress or which is the right order?

I'm not sure if you doing a mix down of a single track like drums, or if this is the entire mixdown. But, first, you make a backup copy and stash it. Then you try variations of whichever vibe you desire. I suggest compression first if this is a mixdown. nice smooth light compression to tighten it up. Then add more flavors to satisfy your taste buds.

oops. I doubled up. i am an old head visual artist who uses sound and video. And I also create performance art. i started doing hiphop production back in 1989. i copped a sampler and started to do projects in schools and prisons. lately, i've been messing with selling drum samples. a friend and i are considering doing an unusual production venture next year. he's guitar player/rapper and i'm best at DSP and drum programming. we'll see what happens. in the meantime, i'm also working with a school to build a studio/classroom and an opera about crack cocaine.

I'm a dj and I am looking to get into production now. I spin house and make house and drum and bass.

Nice idea. Are you gonna do most of the production using software, or are you gonna get some hardware too? Is it an in-house studio that you'll develop or will you track vocals elsewhere?
