This is really going to piss you off. One of the drawbacks to the MPC series (besides the 4000) is that it's not really a full featured sampler. The filters and other parameters can be changed on a sound, but only before retriggering. That is, the NV Slider will change the filter while you are recording, but will only take effect when you tap the pad after movong it. Let's say you have a sample like 10 seconds long, and you want to use the slider to fade a sample out, as it plays. Can't do it! You can only do pete rock delay-style echo outs. Likewise, you cannot augment the filter or any other parameters in "realtime".
But, here's what you do to make it change the filter in the manner that is available: Hit the pad with the sample you want to filter. Then press the activator button right above the slider. The screen will change to slider mode, and you should hit the pad again to make sure it's effecting the right one. It will sound weird, because the first selection is Tuning. Highlight where it says Tuning, and scroll w/ the wheel till it changes to filter. Hit enter, and then main screen. If you want to effect the filter, or any parameter AFTER you have recorded the sequence, do the same procedure, but before you go to main screen, hold shift and hit the slider button again. This will light up the 'after' light, and let you apply the filter to a sequenced sound. BE CAREFUL. Whichever method you use the slider for, no matter the parameter you are effecting, make SURE to hit stop at the end of the sequence. Better yet, turn off the loop while yourecord slider movements, because when you wrap back around, the sequencer will kick into overdub. Thats gonna change the next pass of that sound into whatever position you last had the slider at. If you leave the slider still, it will make them all the same filter level again, until you stop recording, dig? Then turn the loop back on and your good to go. If you go to turn the slider after function off, or you decide you're not going to use the slider at that moment, hit an empty pad in the slider activation screen. This will apply whatever parameter to an empty pad, so as not to effect any of your sounds.
