best way to record bass trax

how do u record bass lines into the mpc? is there a way to do it without going sequence by sequence?

in other words, do i have to record the bass line in each sequence, or can i make the entire song (the drums) and then go back and record the keys etc thru the whole song...

do i have to convert the song back into a sequence to do this?

just looking for some ideas about the best way to record the bass (or any keys line) into the song...

first i don't see how to select a track, and if i hit rec or overdub it takes me to whichever sequence is active in the song mode...

am i missing something?

Man you need to learn how to use the mpc first.

Seems like you don't know how to use tracks, sequences, and songs right.

well i've been mostly using the mpc as a drum machine and using the sequencer in logic for the rest of the parts...

but, i'm just experimenting with using the sequencer in the mpc for all of the parts, and i realized u couldn't record in song mode.

so i guess i'll just sequence the entire drum part, assemble the song, then make the song into a sequence, then add the rest of the parts... is this the common way of doing it?

Why are you using song mode? Is it because you want to make the drum loops longer? Just copy the bars or insert more blank bars to make a longer sequence.

Song mode is usually used when you have different parts of a song that you want to chain together. Like intro, verse1, hook, outro. Those would be different sequences and then you would put them together in song mode. I usually don't turn the song into it's own new sequence but everyone's different.

And remember to keep different instruments and things on different tracks. It's much easier to edit.

yeah exactly, i use song mode so i can chain a bunch of different loops... intro, verse, fill, etc... but, i just kind of feel it's un-natural to play the bass line 4 bars at a time... i'd rather play the whole thing in one pass and then go back and fix parts, like u can do with the computer...

(i am keeping the instruments on different tracks...)

OK I reread it all I kinda misunderstood you. You're doing it right if you want to play the bass the whole way through.
