Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

I'm trying to figure out which I wanna go after to add to the MPC4000. Both have their pluses and minuses so hopefully ya'll can help me come to a decision.

Fantom XR pluses & minuses :

+ 6 expansion slots
+ small, compact & takes up little space
+ used, i can get one between $800-950
- heard it's difficult to edit samples and patches with small screen

Fantom X6 pluses & minuses :

+ beautiful color screen (same size as the 4000's I think)
+ keys, pads & knobs :)
+ used, i can get one between $1,300-$1,500
- only 4 expansion slots

Recently I came to the conclusion that I just needed the SOUNDS out of the module & since the XR can expand 2 srx's further, that would be THE choice. But after my boy brought over the motif yesterday, the weight of the keys and having an actual BOARD feels a bit more fun. Also take into consideration that I'm not planning on using the Fantom's sequencer AT all, just the sounds & sound shaping abilities. Hell I was even thinking about using some of the Fantom's effects on my Mpc's samples and drums being that the 4000's effects aren't that hot.

Any insight would be appreciated

I'd go for the XR and get a midi controller with that

i dont personally own either, but my girl's lil brother got the X6 for christmas this year. needless to say, ive definitely **** around with it. I have the triton le, so using the X6 was the shit.

sound quality was awesome, and the effects and other aspects (the color screen, etc) are top of the line.

If you like the feel of the full keyboard, then i would say go with the X6. In the end, its about what you're most comfortable with, and what will bring out the best in your music.

then I'd say the XR
cause of the extra SRX cards
and you will be using the mpc as sequencer/sampler
so..

I have a 4K and a FAntom XR. I edit all my sounds via PC with the awesome usb editor. Heh, honestly get a Motif ES. Im selling my Fantom because im using my PC as a sound module, and it sounds waaay better then the Fantom.

But yes, the Keyboard version is alot more inspiring.

I got the keyboard and the workflow is pretty fast, the effects are really good, and for that price is a good deal, i manage to to covert my Emu Soundsets" Pure Phatt, Orbit, Vintage Keys in to the board and im blown away that the sound quality replicates my old modules, if you could save money go with the rack, either will step up your existing setup.
