Freakin Samples

in which ways do you guys freak your samples??? im tired of looping, i chop em, need to perfect that but im ight with it. what techniques do you guys use?? im thinkin of coppin that akai filter to tweak them more, do you guys recommend it?? what can i do to a sample with it??

There's so many ways to color a sample, where to start..
Compression for some but not for all, eq, limiter, mulitband limiter, chorus, reverb, delay, pitch shift, flange, phase, modulation. Many more.
Most of these can be done somewhat with the EB16 efx board.

me personally i dont have a lot to color my beats with so i use what i have
i have a lexicon mpx100 and the EF303this does agood job
you just need to make your sounds -sound different then what you sample
try to hide it, but not to much that it will change the hole sample

change the pitch when you sample speed it or slow it down this makes a difference to me when sampling

I like to sample @ 45 rpm, then sample it at the same pitch at 33 1/3 rpm, then I layer the two in a multitracker/editor like CEP and apply effects until the slow one sounds like a ghost note, then use the fast one as a sample, then I layer the slow ghost note on top. I call it ghost reverb, but its not really, it sounds kina like reverb, but if you play with the attack and decay or run it thru a hi/lo/band pass filter its sounds trippy. Almost like the beat is looping within a loop, but just when you think you locked your ears onto the other "loop" it goes away, then comes back in, then goes away. try it.

so what do u think is better, the eb16 effects board or the akai analog filter?? thanks for the tips

The MFC42 is a analog style filter (low pass, resonant, etc.) , the board are effects (reverb, delay, etc), depends what your looking for.

On the MPC2000XL you can tweak your samples pretty hard, most people dont know about this function, in the program parameters screen, when your playing with the res, attack, and cutoff, highlight a number and press open window. Start tweaking. You can dramatically alter sounds in these sub-screens.

Id spend more time looking for good sounds than tinkering with effcts and filters though. =)

Also, by just copying a sample, adjusting the attack and cutoff on the copy, and tapping at a lighter velocities during recording around the main parts, you can imitate reverb (set copy to poly) and delay (set copy to mono).

The EB16 from what most of my friends tell me is not all that great.
I beg to differ. I have made songs using only the EB16 and they would swear I used software effects when it was ONLY the EB16 being used.

I use MODULATION quite a bit. I agree with Doveski, you gotta dig through the effects parameters the way you dig through records and samples and you will get the same results, good stuff that you can definitley use. HINT: OPEN WINDOW on everything the cursor lands on.

It's underated and underused from what I see going on in many of my friends production techniques. They sleep on the "little card that could".

what about the mfc analog filter??? im in between, i dunno which one to get, i was thinkin on using the mfc when i sample to take out unwanted elements and tweak it so it doesnt sound the same when i use it on a song. the effects i dunno, i thought i could always add effects when i bring it into cubase, i dont even use the effects on cubase like that either, is just time consuming experimenting and ish but thats how u learn. i work in the city so when i get home in jerz i got limited time to experiment and i just get started on beats but i gotta step my game up.

It isn't really for taking out unwanted ellements, get that electrix freq killer if that's what you are after.
