it seems pretty easy to play bass out with your pads. i dont really have trouble. a keyboard can benefit you if you in some ways like if you have a module or a sampler that will spread the samples across your keys for you like an S series akai sampler or even a softsampler. the mpc cannot do that for you so if you dont have a keyboard yet, you have to use the pads. you can find nice bass tones all over the internet. just search for free instrument samples and 90% of the time, the site will have a bass section.
throw a nice bass tone on a pad, hit 16 levels and bang something out. may take a little practice but it will work.

You don't like that Autochromatic feature? I was used to 16 levels, too, until I took a leap into the Autochromatic, which I thought would be real tricky, but it's so easy to dive into, especially with a MIDI keyboard. The 16 levels is efficient in the idea that you'd want all your sounds in the same program, but that Autochrom, while I'm still practicing with it, gives you a nice degree of control.
Download my first album, "Potential Remains", here:

not that i dont like it..i just find it easier to use 16 level most of the time. i do have a program saved that is in autochrom. format. i use it sometimes, but i find myself using the 16 level more.
usually if that dosnt work for me, ill throw the sample in the 5k and spread it out over my keys. whatever works for you i guess
still keep that autochrom. program on disk so you can pull it back up when you need it! especially if you use a 2k.

I'm new to production, and am learning how to use my newly aquired 2kxl. I was wondering about the bass thing.
Why do people use keyboards? is the point that they are synthesizers and therefore when you hold a key it sustains (hope i'm using the right terminology here). i take it this is something you cannot do with an mpc as its playing samples rather than creating the sound.

I know people who dont even use a keyboard with their mpc. I mean its totally a preference thing. If u like keys go for it u dont like keys or dont have the doe the MPC can do alot. Its jus a matter of letting your imagination run wild.
