Someone told me that the MPC is supposed to be able to stream samples directly off its hard drive, so that I wouldn't have to worry about physically loading long audio tracks into the MPC's limited memory. Is this true?. Is someone out there doing this in a live situation...?
I have just spent 3 days with an MPC4000 to determine whether it can become the "brain" of my live setup, where I want to transfer finished tracks from Cubase SX into the MPC to reproduce these songs live, but with the added ability to dub out the track on the MPC.
I use an S6000 as the backbone of most tracks I produce, so it was easy to load up the multi/programs/,samples into the MPC4000 and transfer the midi data from Cubase to the MPC.
But when it came to transferring audio files, for example, a whole vocal track and backing vocals, guitars etc from the original Cubase files, it was a long process. I ended up reducing my original 24bit Cubase wav files to 16bit so as to fit more into the machine. I also cut up the vocal track into sections etc,etc.
Eventually, after 2 days of staring into the MPC screen, and much ganja, I could hit play on the MPC and my track played back and sounded the same as my original 2-track mix, BUT, I could remix it to my hearts content on the MPC. I ended up successfully transfering 16 tracks of audio into the MPC.
But it would certainly speed up the process if the MPC can stream off disk.
Wikid machine though.
Everyone is telling me..., "get a laptop man..blah,blah." I know a laptop can do heaps more and is cheaper etc,etc. But ask yourself, would you call a laptop a MUSICAL INSTRUMENT?
After 3 days of using the MPC, I came away feeling inspired and excited. That's what an instrument is meant to do...inspire you!
