i've got a 2Kxl, and will have a AKAI DPS12 soon.

i was wondering if anyone can tell me if i can hook a CD RW drive(SCSI) right to the DPS 12, and burn my album right there? or do i need to use a third party(software or otherwise) to do my recording and mixdown after i get the tracks in the DPS? also, if anyone can recommend a decent multitrack program for a MAC, that doesn't cost as much as protools.

some multitrack software i know: samplitude, cool edit pro, wavelab.

i also am thinking about gettin either a kind of DPS or a soundcard so i can use one of these multitrack softwares. but i think there's no sense in using both, a DPS and a multitrack software. i like hardware, but i guess the software multis have a lot more possibilities regardin automation etc.

im sure you can burn right from the DPS12, cause otherwise you would have no possibility to transfer the huge amounts of data away from the DPS

Don't forget Vegas Video, and don't let the "video" fool you, it's deep with audio and video. I just use the audio part. Damm good multitracker.

Get a MiniDisc recorder.

no dis to dove, but I would aviod md, MAD compression, In fact, the MD stores so much by cutting freq. out of the sound so it fits dat means that part of the original is simply cut off. Its good to use to take a track to a friends house to listen to and all and it is great for say, if you wanna lend someone a track, but you dont want him buring 5 million copies, you can use MD, (which is why dat is still used I think), but with CDR's its kinda useless, which is why they never caught on.

none taken, i either record directly to hard drive or make a Pro Tools session for my serious stuff.

but i swear to god my boy uses nothing more than an MPC 2000XL and mini disc recorder running a stereo signal through a Vestax dj mixer, and the shit sounds tight, hes one of the top up and coming undrground poducers in the bay. he did the whole Eyecue (from hobo junction) album and the up and coming Sach (from the Nonce) 12" like that.

he does a beat, doesnt even save it, records directly to MD, doing the mixing on the MP, and does the breaks and switches live using the track mute function and dumps into a tracker for whoever to flow over from MD.

Its like the compression on the mids works out perfectly.

aight, so let me get this straight, cuz i gots a vestax and mpc just likeyour boy. so allz i needz to do is make my sequences, and then what? do i just record them out of song mode? or with the MD recorder, can i actually work with tracks for the final mixdown?

cuz i think the MD would be a good idea for making mix tapes as well, or at least mix cds. i just need something for my album too.

and i'm sure i can burn DATA w/ the DPS, which i did get today, and it's killing me being here @ work right now, cuz it's just sittin in the lab. but that's on some other ishh. but i was wondering if the DPS will give me the right format to burn the track right to a CD so i can play right out of the drive. or do i have to save the MIDI files, and arrange them in a software program.

dont worry bout the format, everything is .wav or at least reads .wav files

also the xl reads .wav, the mpc 4000 .wav is already the native format
same thing with .aiff, case u work on mac

I mean figure out how you want to work, whole point is you dont need to mess with your DPS till doing the final mix with vocals if you dont want to.

even my homie still dumps the fully mixed track from MD to multitrack for vocals. holla back.

right on, and the MD will be alot less expensive than the alternative. but when i record on the MD, how do i do it? from song mode, or sequence by sequence. cuz i'm gonna lose my track information in the MD right? or, do i have to record one track @ a time? cuz i'd really like to play with the levels some more after it gets out of the MPC. but i can only do that if i still have track information, right?

yeah, youll lose all track information, youll just have your finished mix. but thats whats cool, is he just does the mix in track mute mode, with the outs from the mixer going into the MD, over with, let it be.

the mcs work out the verses around his structure. then the engineer tweaks it a little on the comp.

if you want to play with the levels more after, just use the DPS or record track by track to a Digi 001 or something (i use the 001 and a CDR).
