Recording one track at a Time

One way of getting every individual track on its own dedicated Audio track in a Hard Disk recording program is to play each track individually and record them one at a time.
This task seems very stressful. Also, one will have to go into the HD recording program and make sure all tracks line up properly. I assume that this can be automated using MIDI. If this is possible, then how is this done?
Is there a midi control that can trigger the Record function in the HD recorder at a certain time determined by the MPC ?

I use that technique. I even have the 8 outs, but sometimes I still just put stuff in a track at a time. It's really not stressful at all. It takes a little time, but most things that are worth doing take time.

I use ProTools and just sync using MIDI Beat Clock. That way when I press record on PT, the MPC automatically starts.

If you don't want to use sync, or your recorder doesn't have midi, just....
1. Create a one bar pattern at the beginning of your song.
2. The pattern will consist of one drum hit on beat 1 (rim click works well)
3. Then just put this pattern at the beginning of every track you feed into your recorder.
4. Then once they're all in, just line up the rim clicks at the beginning every track, and everything will be lined up.

can you use protools software by itself or do you need their specific hardware as well?

Whatever hardware you have, if it works with PT, don't worry bout it, you're covered.

I have a Roland SI-24 that has settings for use in either Logic or Protools, Cubase or you can set up your own settings to work with other programs.

Most stuff today is versatile enough that it'll work in a pinch regardless of whether it's the "right thing"

I have the Yamaha aw16g and I record one track at a time as well. I use the aw16g as the master, set the tempo to the same setting as the MPC and the rest is a piece of cake. I prefer it that way because I have control over the individual tracks.

I have a problem recording one track at a time with Digital Performer 2.7 using Midi Time Code on both DP and the MPC2000XL...The first half of the first measure is silent on the MPC. It's not a real problem as i double all my measures to get the first half measures. But it bugs me when i have to record 20 tracks like yesterday. Anybody knows anyhting about it ?

Unfortunately, no you can't. Pro Tools software will ONLY work with Digi hardware. Pro Tools Free will work without Digi hardware but it's limited to 8 tracks. PT software will recognize most control surfaces but for audio in/out you need their hardware.
