KANYE WEST.....

I have read that kanye west produced alicia keys single( he don't know my name). My question is where did he come in on the track.. I know he probably laid the drums down and alicia laid the piano down but what else did he do to the song!!!!!! Is this man gifted with the piano like he is with the mpc?

In the hiphop world, the term "producer" has become to mean the person who makes the beats and basically provides the instrumental track for the MC to rap over.

For other styles of music, and the original meaning of "producer" is someone who is in charge of a recording session. He basically directs what happens and helps the artist shape their vision (like what a director does in the film world.)

Really, more of a distinction should be made between "beat makers" and "producers." A producer will know his way all around the studio, and know how to put together songs and craft the music as a whole including coaching the vocalist/instrumentalists and getting a good performance out of them.

A beat maker is just a guy with a MPC who knows how to make beats.
Someone like Dre is a true producer because he knows how to bring lots of different people in (musicians, songwriters, MCs, beat makers) and coach and direct everyone, and end up with a hit song at the end of it all.

So it's possible that Kayne west didn't make a single beat, or play a note on piano, but still PRODUCED the song.

sometimes i just feel like putting the more usa "yo gangsta" hiphop kids in their place. i studied and worked for years for my certification as an audio engineer, and have made so much music, toured, played so many gigs, built my studio up to world class, been in shitty and successful bands and acts... the list goes on

you cant call yourself a "Producer" just cause you have an MPC and copy the same crap that neptunes do.

not hating on hiphop, as i live it (its a daily operation.. heh heh) but the attitude of it represented on this board some time is clearly lacking intelligence.

as for the dude WRITING ALL IN CAPITALS, lay off the crack man, and the capslock. of course "ghost writers" are the norm... its called freelancing. you sign a contract which basically is a purchase of your music/skills for a straight up cash settlement, and you get no creds or "points" in return.... points being a percentage of profits.

some of the things that happen behind closed doors in studios are quite amusing/disgusting in terms of how the outcome is portayed in the PR and media. readers of Mixerman's hilarious "**** Slap Sessions" would know what im talking about....

I think its probably a case of him making them up and remembering them in his head. Probably needs a few takes but gets there in the end.

that track was made up from the mpc chopping up an old "main ingredient"(not PR & CL's album) track and alicia lacing the keys!

I agree with you on this one, if you listen to the hidden track on the Blueprint album, the song called "Lyrical Exercise" he even says before the song begins, that he would say a rhyme and just remember it.

can anyone answer where does the Executive Producer fit in

i have heard of P. Diddy getting both Production / Executive Producer credits

but like Suge Knight & Bryan / Ronald Williams (Cash Money) they alwayz get Executive producers credit on everything

when we know for a fact people like Manny Fresh are "producing" records and even going as far as being the sound engineer

one would think that in the above example of Manny Fresh shit if he doing all those jobs he would be the Executive Producer of the record

is the Executive Producer basically the person that put the money up for the label or is the Executive Producer also really "producing" records as well

my view on the Executive Producer at this point is he's the HNIC Pimping everybody and putting up the cash for the records production
