Were my ableton live cats at?? Drop some tips n some knowledge in this thread.. For the hiphop heads..

I feel like I'm the only one using this program for hiphop.. Most people who use it make house, electronic etc...

Anyway heres some small tips that I've picked up:

- In your preferences under "default warp mode" Set it to "Re-pitch"

That way whenever you drag n drop samples into your set its always in time with the bpm. You can stretch samples up and down by simply adjusting the bpm.

- Ctrl+e is your best friend... I chop samples so damn quick in ableton, Shit is not even funny.. Drag a sample or whatever in the arrangement view, chop using ctrl+e.. Turn off the snap for more detailed cuts...

You can then drag each slice into impluse or sampler...

Explain me how you sample stuff in ableton.

my tips:
-The live-window(not the audio files and waves displayed) is great for recording stuff. All the Things that you do in there can be recorded. Thats great if you want to lower the frequency in the verse, or you can easily fade out stuff. It's also great for djing.

-The beat repeat on cuts and scratches from your turntable make your sloppy wack cuts seem like the best.

-Enable 'warp' in the sample menu and turn up the transpose to about 5-7. That's your quasimoto voice!

-Vinyl distortion(filter) can make your ship sound like you ran it through a vintage cassete player. Mad grimy shit.

I'm an expert at Live, and use it to produce glitch-hop music.

I'll post some tips over the next few days.

For now, I'd recommend you guys check out these excellent (freeware) plugins, made by some outstanding programmers, that complement live very well. They're all auto-chopping FX that produce various drum n' bass/IDM beat-mashups (usually on the last beat). Great for adding some flair to even straight-up hiphop, or the more experimental trip-hop and glitch-hop genres.

For both PC and Mac try SuppaTrigga:

Or Livecut (new version should be super cool):

For PC (this is the ultimate auto-beat-chopping plugin):

Live 6

my secret with live 6 in the instrument rack!!!!!!!!!!!!

throw a grain filter and a 8eq with a saturator with a simpler or sampler with a thick sample hit (string or brass is my choice) and season and enjoy

(add a reverb for space if you like)

live is was my first and will be my last DAW love the program to death. My tip is when your done with your final mix add a saturator to the master, The preset "a bit warmer" works the best. Move the gain down a little and listen to your beat come to life.

First things first: if you're new to live, get a coffee and run through the tutorials (they really are the best, most integrated tutorials designed for a DAW program).

I'm only writing the following for beginners who don't get how to really use Live - I know many of 'em. I will post more advanced tips later.

RECORDING PERFORMANCE FOR PRODUCTION:

Live is the most incredible live recorder of performances.

To utilize live for production study the session view. (If you're in what looks like the arrangement view press tab and you'll see what looks like the mixer section with a series of slots aloft each channel's meter.)

Live is revolutionary only because of the session view, especially since Acid, which came out long before Live, could do time-stretching incredibly well - and it was cheap! The session view can literally transform the way you produce music.

I produced a stellar glitch-hop album in a very short period, but most importantly in a live setting.

Here's what I did:

I worked mainly with a turntablist (DJ Soap). I hooked him up to my laptop, switched to session view (tab) and setup an audio-in channel by arming it (hit the record button below the meter).

I then began playing some preprogrammed/sampled beats/loops while he spun away. Here's the fun part. I just hit the the record button in the first slot of the armed channel - the record button shows up in every slot in a channel once you arm it - and then hit stop after two or however many bars of his scratches. I then did this over and over again, meanwhile aligning each of my samples to his scratches across the horizontal access, making copies when necessary. Then, I didn't stop there, I even played along, recording my own soft-synth performances n'sync via a midi channel. It can get a little tricky at first, but you'll get used to soon enough - especially with a midi controller.

Up next. What to do with your performance.... i.e., how to translate you're session experience into an arrangement.

Any questions, just let me have 'em.

I'm obsessed with Live. It's the chameleon of DAWs.

Little trick that's buried in the manual:

When you midi map a note # to a clip, while holding down that note you can hit note range limits above and below the root note then play clips chromatically ala timemachine in Kontakt (timestreached AND pitchshifted).
That's possibility the best Live trick ever.

Any useful information on live would be great, im new to live and it’s my DAW of choice for tracking beats from my 2500. Also I rewire Reason so for me it’s the perfect solution. Every thing synced, routing nice and easy what I would love to know more about are the warping techniques as I would like to manipulate my samples in live rather than the 2500.

Peace
