scratching over beats

i doubt there is an easy way to do this but...i want to lay down a scratch for one of my beats. i only have the mpc to sample do i just have to practice the cuts until it sounds right? i can't listen to the beat and sample at the same time can i? i doubt it.....any tips?

alright, heres my ol school approach to this. record your beat in a basic form to tape or cd or whatever you got, then play the tape while you scratch and sample. make sense?

damn i feel stupid that is pretty obvious. i have a tape deck right next to the mpc never use it though...thanks mesh.

I'm no DJ and your tip sounds fool proof but what about playback speeds. I mean not all devices playback at the same speed especially tape decks! I'm not knocking your advice if I were to attempt to lay scratches I would probably do the same thing or sample it myself. For future references got any other tips on that subject. You never know when that may be me trying to do something similar on a colabo.

if your sampling up the scratching you can adjust it how you like to fit within the mpc right? i mean it'll be close enough.

but it is really all dependent on your gear. if you only have a tape deck, use that, if you can burn a cd even better, etc...

True, but if you play it back on the same deck it was recorded into -as in this case- it will be the same speed as long as the deck rolls smoothly. My cassette deck rolls real slow so if i use it to record something it will have that chipmunk effect when played back on another deck, but since i never take my cassettes elsewhere it doesn't really matter.

what i do is:
record turntable into pc.

play beat from mpc to monitors, take practice cuts. and keep getting at it until you feel happy with the results.

you can also use a wav editor if you want to fine tune/edit sh1t up
