J Dilla Donuts LOUDNESS.....

How do u think dilla got this album so loud? I think he just uses an mbox, correct? When tracking from the mpc is it better to have the volume louder on the mpc or louder on the input gain? My soundcard doesnt have an input gain so when i turn the mpc volume up when tracking, the input seems to clip and i get distortion... do u think i would be better off getting an interface like an mbox that has an input gain? would this make my mix any louder?

#1 surprising as this may seem, Dilla had little to do with it

#2 mastering



now, did people forget why they put a volume control on stereos? when things are mastered this loud, they sound like sh*t. the louder it is, the more distortion is present.

pay for studio time w/ engineer and take your PT sessions up there, track them through their board and work with the engineer.

Or if your nice already...

just run your session through the board and use the outboard of your choosing.

Ive noticed that the dilla and madlib albums that are mastered by dave cooley are way loud and clip like crazy. especially dilla's shining and madlibs latest beat konducta.

Yo rickrock... in your expert opinion, do you think they compressed the hell out of donuts (specifically donuts) for effect, or for the sake of making it loud as possible? The drums feel a lil weak on some of the tracks and it seems like they threw on some compression to make the rest of the beat "duck" when those drums hit (keeping with the current trends in contemporary electronic music)...Or can this effect be achieved without making the volume levels ridiculously high?

dilla has his own studio for fvcks sake hes no ameture beat maker


just check out the videos of his crib

hes got expansive mixing desks

he worked hard and thats how he got to the level where he is

his music reaked of experimentation and time

That track geek down is the best engineered track on the album its crystal clear.... do u think he layerd that drum break kick wit an 808?
