well i got a plain ol 2000, but i think i can help. heres what i would do.
I would hit shift + trim, there you can see the waveform of the sample.
In that screen there should be a loop button (its like f4 or something, youll see it on the screen). Now highlight where it says, "loop:off" and turn that on. After that, you can highlight the start point and adjust it to where you want the loop to begin. Then highlight the end point and adjust it to where you want the loop to end. Now press a pad and hold it. Is it looping? Does it sound like crap? if so you have to listen closely and continue adjusting the start and end points of that loop. youll get it. usually with my basses i lower the frequency (shift+prgm) to make it sound better. Then I mess with filtering and thing of that sort in the effects section (dont know if you got an effects card.
Like I said thats how i do it on my mpc2000 classic. The xl might be different but this should give you the concept.
Peace

Yeah basically what im tryin 2 do is use my mpc like a keyboard ( play melodies etc..) when i sample somthing. For example horns. I wanna have my short sampled horn hit then use the 16 levels function and play something. While at the same time, being able to hit a pad and making that " short horn hit" sustain for aslong as i press down on it. Thanx 4 the tips yall, im gonna go try them out 2nite.

also once you get it looping to a good standard you can time stretch it to the same bpm as your beat .... this means if there are any irregular clicks or if the loop point is noticable at least it will be in time with your beat and hopefully disguised under your drums....
i'd advise trying to sample a couple of different bass notes though and make a program using all of em....
