I have no problem filtering out the main melody of a sample and isolating the drums... What I have a real problem with is when I find a great sample but it's got some really thick drums that I can't filter out so I'm **** cause I refuse to just loop the samples and do nothing original with it... Any suggestions cause you guys are really up on your shit (I'm new to the forum but I've been following the tips for a while now)... I use Adobe Audition, Soundforge, and Wavelab... The one I'm most fluent in is Adobe Audition, but I keep getting told that SoundForge can do so much more... I personally can't grasp how to work half the shit in Soundforge, but maybe you guys can help from your experience... oNe

Hey Matt,

I know someone will answer your question on sampling with Sound Forge the guys have been real helpful on here.

I try to post & answer as many questions I can but in the sampling department I am just really starting to dive into using it.

I notice you mention you can filter out the main melody of a sample and isolate the drums with no problem.

Could you give me run down on how you do it so "eaisly"?

Last few days I have been hammering at it and getting insight from everyone and it has help (i can now sample everything except drums)

A brother would greatly appreciate your wisdom on the topic.

In the meanwhile you might find this thread I pose a similar question about sampling a little insightful

I actually used the tips that everyone gave from your post... The one where you asked about how to sample drums... The SoundForge tips they gave worked for me... So there's really nothin elseI can tell you about that... Sorry.

There's no way to filter out the drums cause you will end up filtering those same frequencies outta the very sample that you are trying to preserve and the end result, messing up the sample. Nothin wrong with trying though.

I'm good with both AA and SF but my preference is SF. You can do almost the same things in both, SF just has the more user friendly interface to me.

actually i went over that thread again and started seeing better results
with my samples.

i spent the last several hours having fun creating sounds but sadly not producing any music.

it's all part the game, i guess :(

thanks again everyone

I do the same thing, when I don't feel like making music I just play with samples and do experiments. This can go on for days sometimes.

When do I feel like making music I use the resulting samples from those experiments.

Is it possible to actually slice the drum sounds right out of the sample and still have it sound good?

By cashstill Mon Mar 08, 2004 8:29 am
Lou One, the answer is yes.

You just got to take the time out to experiment with this shiznit.

If u follow the most recent threads tips that Lampdog, Prah, DJ James, and Myself have posted you should hear some drum samples (or any other instruments) that you can use.

It took me awhile to start to get the hang of things but I am getting to the point where I can look at a WAV file on the screen and pinpoint where a snare or drum is located with out previewing the sound.

Read up on the recent threads and do a search and you will find the information to get you straight.

Cash. I'm not sure if you got what I was meaning. For example like dude said you want to sample something, but the drums are too prevalent and you want them out of there so you can add your own. filtering and EQ is just not working. At that point can you actually slice out the kicks snares etc. out of the sample one by one and preserve the melody and/or bassline or whatever it is that you want to sample without it sounding retarded?

Yeah, I hear what you sayin now.

If filtering not working for you I am not sure what else you can do.
I came across this product recently that has the capability of extracting melodies & instruments out of audio tracks then you can convert them to midi.

That's the only thing that I have seen that says it will seperate audio to the degree where you can re-work it at will and implement your own beatz 100%.

The shiznit so smart it turns the audio into the actual notes that were originally played in the composition.

The program even claims once you extract whatever portion you want out it can match the sample or melody to your own beat without any "artificial" tempo changes.

Its cost like $499.00 though.

Somebody else might be able to run something down to on how to pull it off though with what your using though.

Let's wait and see what tips they got.

If there was something out there that could do all that it would be worth the 500 bones. Think of all the possibilities you could do with something like that.

what is the device your talking about?

By Lampdog Mon Mar 08, 2004 5:45 pm
The "device" is a wave editor, realtime noise gate and your brain, save your $500. So sorry to sound sarcastic but it's true. It's all about you getting bizzy with your different programs to find out what your limitations, fixes and workarounds are. People can only tell you so much stuff before you actually have to sit down and experiment your azz off, I actually experiment alot, sometimes good results sometimes not.

i dont see any way that youd be able to do that and have it sound good if the drums are literally OVER the actual melody playing becuase then you would be cutting out the melody too.
if theres a melody, then a pause in the melody where the snare or kick hits, then zone that bad boy and relplay the melody w/o hitting the drum hits.

I have done that before and it's works sometimes. I chop up a sample of the melody and make my own melody.
