With the Bib joint my musical mind wasn't even there.

You could do it in chops and use your DAW's comping feature. That's a great hack.

It's hard to chop together a cohesive keyboard solo and maintain natural playing style, especially playing arpeggios. Personally, I don't like recording or tracking by hacking things together. Nevertheless, when are releasing the track, because there's no way you made it just for this challenge.

Me releasing it? I'll keep it in my catalog, no one comes looking for Electro Funk like that. To be real l was hoping it would be ok l did my best and not everyone will like my best. My last track is in a biding war. So.... I just let my attorney handle that. Heck lm trying to get at least 2 days where l don't do any music and just sleep.

Went with bees. I think he had the perfect fit for this challenge. It was a hard call with charles. I dug the vibe on charles' track the most but bees really came with genre and polished sound. It was so close for me though. on one hand charles came with a raw gritty sound and the vibe to go with it, then bees on the other had something that was cleaner, and still ticked the boxes.

tao- I like that your style shines through between the different genres. You seem so calculated in your description, yet your vibe is more of an organized chaos (in my mind), thats not a negative. just very far from the way I organize my ideas. I dig your avant guard style.

e- I see the angle you were coming from. I think its great you stepped out of your comfort zone and actually challenged yourself instead of stacking the deck against us. The vibe I get is more middle school dance then a breaker boy track. I dig the nostalgic feel mixed up with a modern vibe.

danoc- your ish was hott man. just didn't tick the boxes for me with a breakdance track. I was waiting for you to say "you dropped the bomb on me", meander into a g thang groove, or someone shout " WORD UP". its like the track could take so many turns and really shows your abilities beyond making lindsey lohan beats. Great work.

myself- I get the red jock strap award. I wasn't going to submit anything as I really didnt get beyond the 4 bars you hear repeating with the 2 chords and an arp. I replaced the arp with just poking around on the keys added the little break at the end and just submitted. I spent more time mixing the 8 tracks or whatever than I did making it. I did however get to trouble shoot my workflow on the new os and get to work on mixing some. Which I notice I need to come cleaner and more refined. Hopefully yall can offer some pointers, I know some of it is the sample selection I chose.

Nice work everyone. I think bees really came out and made a first impression. Hopefully he continues to roll with these.

E: I enjoyed your track, maybe a little to smooth for Electro Funk. Get those drums up in the mix and perhaps adds some effects to space it out, in your own way. But as always it Top Quality!

Cockdiesel and Near Tao: Your tracks not really touching genre, but I do hear an improvement
every challenge and that's what counts. Electro funk is really dancer driven, the music needs to make people get out there and jam. Bboys and Bgirls can but they really don't dance to this. It's more a popper, robot, strutter, style of music. Near Tao, you have the idea on paper, I just would like to hear that translated in the music. You're all cerebral, we need more freestyle and FUNK!

Myself: Finalized mix being worked on, Changing up the main drums, Removing some of layers to open it up.
I appreciate the honest feedback theses are the notes I take with me. Ears open, no ego!

Bees80: Represent the Electro Funk genre very well. I enjoyed the groove and the openness of the mix and the selection of instruments were spot on. Also, this challenge was right in your pocket, I await the selection of the next Genre, let keep switching it up. I vote for BEES80!

I can go from Pop to Dance Hall to RnB to Trap to Grass Root Golden Age Hip Hop to Pop Ballads, l can go fast l can go slow. Piano Skills:

1. You barely moved from middle position.
2. You're constantly hesitating, searching for basic chords and fingering.
3. The video clearly shows, you're a beginner/novice. Because if your body knew the keyboard, you wouldn't have to look at the keys or search for basic triad position.

This is the piece I'm currently practicing and it's kicking my A$$. Like throw away my piano mad. I just don't have the control, feel, and speed. So I'm back to practicing arpeggios, ascend and descends runs on the piano. I say this because the person, who playing those keys on that funk song, should have no issues with playing Chopin: Fantasie-Impromptu Op 66. At least in the right hand.

Brilliant Chopin piece... you probably just kicked off my start to listening to classical music again...

The pianist is amazing, his control, timing, feel, and accuracy is +1000. Mastery level for sure, you can see the easy in which he plays. His max effort appears effortless.

What up folks!!!! Apologies for being silent. Was only on my phone, and I’m not trying to view a forum on my phone.

So my entry - appreciate the feedback! It’s interesting - first I’ll say this. Although I come from this era, and I LOVE electric / electro funk music, it’s definitely not my core. All of my released music, none of it is hip-hop. Not because I don’t love it - because it doesn’t flow out of me - probably similar to what Danoc described about him and jazz. When I was putting this together, and started thinking... damn, this could be a cool song. And that was the beginning of my departure from a hardcore hip-hop sound - at least I’m thinking that where I chose the blue pill instead of the red pill. LOL. Then as the lyrics starting coming together (because I wanted to make a full production this time), I knew I was on a different path, but I wanted to finish the song so that you all could hear where my head went. I think NT, you were the one that said my submission has an electro sound (maybe CR you said it too), but it didn’t fit squarely in the genre, and I 100% agree. That said, I’m happy with how the song turned out. And I’m actually hopeful to finish tweaking it and releasing it sometime next year. And one thing folks - if I ever “win” a challenge, you can be sure what I choose won’t be in my comfort zone. First, that’s not fair to everyone else, and second - I want to get better - so I need to live outside of my comfort zone.

And with THAT said... MAAAAAAAAN I’m SO glad this round brought some HEAT!!! Here are my thoughts:

Bees80 - Man, THIS is the genre. This track would fit perfectly on the Electric Funk series. If you played this for others from the era and asked “you remember this song?”, I’m betting someone would say yeah, I think that’s the Jonzun Crew. Very nice submission. Man I’d love to have this track in my car to listen to - yes I have an electric funk playlist. Haha

CR - Man, THIS is the genre. I think this track would fit perfectly on the Electric Funk series too. Likewise, I think you could also fool people into thinking this was created in 1985. For me this challenge is between you and Bees80. I’m leaning toward Bees80 only because I think mix is “cleaner”, but I get your angle - I think the heavier beat in yours would drive the dancers to do that one extra backspin before laying out. I think Bees80’s would fit more in a car or radio. So if the rules were - it has to be more of a breakin song, I’d go with yours hands down. Since that wasn’t specified, I’m torn between these two. I’ll decide in a bit. But man, EXCELLENT submission. I can hear how this time you went for a completed production. I’m gonna need this one for my car too. Haha

NT - Glad you submitted this! Feels like a solid foundation for something that could become epic. I know you were limited with time and had some issues, so I think what you were able to get done is solid. The mix is cleaner than last time too, which is nice. I want to listen to yours a few more times to really get a feel, and then I want to read your description again too. Great background. All in all, I’ll say the something similar to last time, man you have a good feel for capturing a sound, I’d love to hear more of your finished work (not time constrained battles or challenges). I have a feeling your work would be NICE. And by the way, I could see a completed submission vying for top spot in a challenge.

Danoc - Maaaan, this is nice! I think, similar to mine, it doens’t quite capture the electric funk vibe. This hits me more like when electric funk started to branch and influence other genres like jazz and R&B. You have the Rhodes runs in there (I did the same), and that for me is what moves it away from this genre - there was no Rhodes used in this genre - I knew that’s what made mine divert from the genre and would make my submission less relevant - and on the low, I was hoping there would be entries that would stick closer to the genre than I did, because I knew I was missing the mark. However yours I think, is closer to the mark than mine is. All in all, solid production.

CD - Man, this one is a SOLID foundation. It seems like the last challenge too - you started with a solid foundation, but didn’t have the time to get something completely done. Similarly, I’d love to see you really get a chance to focus on a production without time constraints (and life constraints - realize that’s not possible all the time). With your work schedule I know it’s difficult. But man, if you had all the time and peace that you needed, I could easily see your submissions vying for the top spot (easily). That said, the mixing this time is better. I can tell you definitely put more time into it. Very nice foundation.

Okay, so that’s my feedback. I’m gonna chill today listening to these more. It’s gonna be CR or Bees80 for me. Not sure which. You two BROUGHT IT.
