Metal Knobs (work in progress with pics)

Just a little idea I'm working on. Purely aesthetic although these do sit a little bit higher than their plastic counterparts. And obviously being metal they do feel nice and solid. Also there's something about having metal parts incorporated into a piece of hardware that gives it a look/feel of quality.

Hand-crafted in a freezing cold garage in the heart of England (Manchester), and finished off with some tasteful knurling (that's the criss-cross pattern on the sides). I'm quite happy.

I'll have the second one finished tonight. I know I've put the original record knob back in the wrong place but I just wanted to get a side by side pic.

I've also got the technology to anodise these green, red, blue etc... and because they're aluminium it wouldn't be too hard to polish up to a chromed effect.

After that... project jog wheel

Yes sir, literally made in the garage earlier today. I'll be doing the second tonight hopefully so I'll try and get some pictures up.

Let me get a few made first and try some different finishes and then I'd be happy to make you a set

If it's for a 1000 I'm fine, I've obviously got mine here so I can do very accurate measurements. For another model, I'd have to track somebody down who had one and measure everything up.

How did you get the textured part on the sides so clean cut?

Harry what bits do you need specifically? Really I'd need to take a few measurements from the original plastic piece itself, and also the spindle of the knob it sits on. I'd also need to see it, because on the 1000 the rotary piece has a flat.

Volume and record gain are identical so they're not a problem. Jog wheel might be slightly more tricky. Let me get one done for the 1000 first and then I'll try and move onto other models.

I'm hoping that Akai used the exact same twisty twister rotary things on every model.

Otherwise it's quite tricky because it's not just the cost of metal you also have to factor in the cost of tools. For example with this one I had to get hold of a specific end mill.

I'll figure it out. If there actually ends up being a bit of a demand for these I'll set up a little shop or something for payments. Shipping would be fairly cheap too as they can obviously go in a padded envelope.

Kon I'd be happy mate, but again I need to try and track someone down who has a 2500 so I can get measurements first. The fit is crucial on a part like this as I'm sure you can imagine!

Thanks tape. They're milled from a single piece of aluminium bar. Good quality metal, and of course can be anodised or polished for extra swayyyyg points. Bright green anodised version anyone?
