Caution this may be long winded

When I first step to the MPC 4000 from the MPC 2000XL I thought it would be pretty much the same and I got the Owner`s manual speed read through learn some of the extras and the new functions. I started to think that is a little more complicated because there was so much information that I didn`t understand and naively I thought it wasn`t important. Move on reference manual and learned a hell of alot more, but still parts I found techical and a little intimadating. I got on the net researched, I met you people around the way and even ran into that Sample King guy!!! I hit them up for all the tips, tricks, and assistance. And every now and then I got the read the manual bit and (I admit it steamed me sometimes) because I read the ***king manual) answer my *****question!!! I thought back then, but I didn`t tell them that. However, I took their advice and went back to the manual reading page by page no skipping until I covered almost each window page and function. I came to find out that I had received one piece of great advice to go back and read the manual and that it helping now so I thank those who without malice helped me to see the light.

But, their was one key ingredient that was missing too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn`t really, really know the basics of synthesis, the basis of a sequencer, the basis of signal processors, the basis of drum notes and and the basis of samplers so I couldn`t really understand all the information I read. Don`t get me wrong, I could make a beat, sample a loop, play some keys, and edit and filter the tune and it sound decent, but I still didn`t really know why the sampler had evelopes, amp, and even how to set the filter to the frequency I wanted (how many times I heard and thought just adjust it to your flavor and taste) Even the Akai guy said to adjust it) Until I found out later that the scale was set for 0 to 10,000 kHz.

My point is that Control change, Midi Filters, duration, and keygroups I slowly learned by buying some basic guides to each areas that I previously mention and discovered that it wasn`t as complicated as I thought. Once I learned the basics!! What a multi is to the sampler section, the internal midi and pad controllers with triggering. The true beauty of the MPC sequencer resolution, time, and editing features. The sleeper had awaken!!! I went back to that Owner`s manual and Bam I realized that it wasn`t a sh*t manual at all. It is a quick start manual in a sense made for someone familiar with the basics of the process of the technology each machine is basically the same like a Keyboard, an MPC 60 and a S950 which is how I look at a my MPC 4000 now all in one. Everyone can read, but without the basics we might not truely understand. Someone once told me that he didn`t travel place to place with his MPC or think about gear because it was what he had in his head that he could go to any studio and make music and whatever they had. Of course it helps to be familiar with the instrument, but it counts more to understand the process. Thanks for reading my rants and discovery.

P.S. I know that reading isn`t everything and you can discover hidden tips that is not even in the manual and how to use the function differently from
their original purpose. On the other hand why reinvent the wheel each time when one can learn from those before you and build from the basics, then take it into the frontier in a new direction.

yo haze! ... really good read! ... could be mine :lol: ! i read and am re-reading, ... those manuals constantly - not always but once a time, forums aswell, (never touched the ref man from the 3000 though) anc each time finding somethin new

got a question:

does this refer to all 4k filters? :shock: lp, hp, notch, ...
if so, where/how did you find it? often wanted to know that too!

... and if so:
0 = 0 kHz???? (i doubt)
100 = 10000 kHz?
and 50 is what??? (how is the filter opening from 0-100 lin, log, exp ??? )

i really miss an explanation of many numbers in there! trial and error is aright but a parameter list is better (... actually imo its a must for such a beast - nearly each crap fxs board has it!)

... and do you know some more of those secrets???

You may already know this but hear goes.
Sorry I got the 0~10000 kHz chart from the MPC 3000 Manual and some sampler books. On page 128 in the MPC 3000 manual has a list of 0=70Hz and 100 all the way out. I went roughly with 70Hz~20kHz. In the program edit in the top block next to the program name field you can change the curve log, exp and so on. Also in the Seq edit you can change the curve too using the event field. I read extra material basic series on samplers and other and applied them back to the 4000 plus the information on the earlier samplers. I recommend What`s a Synthesizer by Jon F. Eiche and the or the Akai S950 manual which is simpler to read.

For creating your own sounds after you sample of course follow pitch, filter, amp, and LFO exactly like it is set up. Pitch (Note Low note or High note ) Filter (Tone Bright or Dark ), Amp(Loud or Soft note) LFO (set the waves for harmonics and the vibrato or tremelo) I hope it helps. :D

thanx haze for all that info! well the filter one with the 70hz ~ 20000 is a very interesting one!

btw: i often read about the difference between the different filter types of the different akai models! don't have any other mpc, akai sampler so i can't actually compare theml! the value is from the 3k manual u said! maybe anyone in here having both models and can say somethin on how similar/different they are? would be interesting and helpful!

the topic is about love/hate the 4k manual! been through both stages several times already and i m sure m not alone with that! currently m more in the hate phase coz i would really like to find some explanations for all the missing definitions and values for all the unsignificant numbers in there ... but i can't find some! thanx for the hint with the older akai models! gonna download some of them! ... tryin to find some things in there!

what i m looking for are things such as an explanation of all the filter types (instead o a silly picture), mod sources, values to all that! ie cutoff 0 = hz, 50 = ... khz, 100 = ... khz, env values, mod depth values, ...

for a good tutorial on synthesis alto, you should look at the manual for clavia's nord lead 2, It covers all the basics of subtractive synthesis really well and this is how I learn about it all.

I used the E-mu XL-7 for about a year and only learnt a little about envelopes and filters but I didnt really catch on until I read the nord lead manual and had a play around with that.

You may know this already but here goes. I`m going on my basic knowledge. On page 214 in the MPC 4000 ref manual you may have it shows the types of filters. A filter is an equalizer and a gate (boy I wish I had a scanner now) is cuts, passes, and blocks the frequency or frequencies you set. You have Low Pass filter which allows frequencies below the filter to pass with the number you set. Hi Pass filter allows only the frequencies above the number you set in the filter. Notch filter (Band eliminate) cuts the center frequencies and passes the surrounding frequences. Band Pass cuts the surrounding frequencies and passes the center frequencies just like the pictures. The other filters are combinations of these four basic filters, LP, HP, Notch, and Band Pass. Triple filter combines three filters together in a custom-made fashion. The Poles set how wide the filter will be and how much frequencies get through 1pole/2pole is wide, and it gets narrower by the 6 pole. Plus the pole+ makes it brighter. When using the Lo<>Hi for you will get a low pass and a High Pass with some cutoff in the center. The peak will cut the surrounding frequencies will a extremely center pass which is very narrow. When you look at the filter graph or picture think that the horizantal line in the middle of the graph is 0dB and a vertical scale sets it as 0 to -20 db cut. The curve runs horizantial on the bottom of the picture from 70Hz to 20,000 (it may be 0 to 20000 because it is a full featured sampler) so as you set the cutoff frequency the curve would move along this scale. Example in a low pass everything to the light part of the curve would be cut and everything in the dark part of the curve would pass. The pole sets how steep the curve would be and the resonace it a boost that brings the filter pass 0dB at the tip of the curve to brighten that frequency before it is cut off. Notch pass is used sometimes to cut a annoying noise out of your frequency.

In making systhesis (creating sounds) you start with (one note), pitch it for the key, Filter it for the tone bright or dark, think of that instrument is at a certain frequency 27.5Hz lowest note on a piano, 65.4Hz lowest note on the cello, 82.4Hz lowest note on the guitar, 261.6Hz Middle C 1046.5Hz High C for a soprano signer and 4186Hz Highest note on the piano etc. Think of the kind of instrument note you want to make use the filter types sorry I can`t find my list of instrument frequences right now. Amp for softness or loudness of the note, and a LFO for modulation. Back to filters with phrase loops and riffs I got tips to use the 2pole LP and Low<>band since they were use alot in the earlier MPC 60, 3000 with to make a basslines. Band pass is great for midrange instruments. HP for Hi-Hats and strings. Phaser is interesting with cut and boosts mmmmn I lets you try it and see take care I will come back later with more. P.S. talked to Akai guy again and I quote" The filter parameter is the same on the MPC series but the types are more on the 4000. If someone else can add or contribute more please do.

ill add a little about the workings of filters and the way the slopes work......


the speed/rate to which a filter opens is know as the slope,this slope varies depending on the design of the filter.
In old analog synths(wihch i love!) the filters in these where constructed using resistors and capacitors, back in the 60s synths used just one of each, called a RC (resistor/capacitor)for short
Using a single RC is what gives us a 6db per octave slope,this means that everytime the fequency is doubled the attenuation increases by 6db.
Each indervidual Rc element is know as a pole,so if you have two Rc's in a synth then you will have a 2-pole filter,which will attenuate at 12db per octave. In the case of a 4-pole filter it will attenuate 24db per octave.
Therefore 4-pole filters make larger changes to the sound with any movements and sound more synthetic than a typical 2-pole filter which will offer much more of a gradual change sounding more o'natural(':lol:').\

when i talk about Rcs, they are the original electrical parts used in analog syths,this is what digital filters are modelled on,. I.e the 4k digital filters use analog modelling.

sup blue haze,

I thought that the "Curve" parameter at the top of the program page sets the velocity response for the current program?
and when u say change the curve in the event field,i dont quite understand what u mean?
