File Organization Ideas

I have placed my order for my HD and Adapter kit and can't wait for the power of OS 2.

With all of storage space of a huge hard drive, I am a little worried about keeping up with all the sounds and programs.

What are some of the strategies you guys use for organizing your sounds, sequences, programs and songs?

What are some of the problems you have encountered with your setup of files?

If you wanna save a project or a beat your working on just make a folder title it and where it says type just roll all the way to the save entire memory and it wil make a project file so you can load it up later and it will have your beat sequences and programs....

i've learned to be anal when it comes to the organization of samples... if it ain't organized properly, half the battle is trying to find that one sample that you're looking for... so i try to be as detailed as possible... i'm sure everyone has their own method of saving/storing samples... you just have to find a method that works best for you... here are some ideas for you:

organize by:
-artist
-album
-year
-type of sample (piano/strings/drums/etc...)
-hits
-loops

you can even go deeper into detail if you want/need to...

bass samples go into the bass folder

kick samples go into the kick folder

hitihata,ssfasdjfhsdjkfhsjklfhsdjkfhasljkdfhsdjf

and so on.

i make i snare kick sample hihat ......ect folders then i pick files from where ever i want then after im finished my beat i make a new folder with the date of the beat then save my program sequence and all the samples i used in that track there so realy im have 2 saves of samples but thats how i like it cuz i still have it saved in samples kicks snares ect.... and i have it in the folder for the beat i made so if i ever wanted to use the sample in something else i dont havae to go into the folder for the beat i just made to use it again

i make a folder for every beat i make. then i save everything there, samples, programs, seqs and songs.

i do the same thing as roffe when I need to save songs/tracks

yeah with the coming of the hd i definitely need to step up my organization.

i've got the sounds i use a lot in separate folders but my issue is song saving...i've babied myself a bit with autoloads. unfortunately, you can only save autoload folders in the root of the cf card.

time will tell

thats exactly what i did...fukin regretting it now...the only reason that i haven't installed a hard drive in either of my machines is b/c it means i'll have to spend at least a couple hours to organize $hit the way i would like to

here is the way that i'm doing it (now that i have the hard drive), unless i have something very specific in mind for a program(which is very likely that i will, at some point) i'm not going to have a pre made program anymore. i'm putting all of my kicks in its own folder, snare is its own folder and so on. with the new OS, you can audition a sound before you load it, so i will go through each sound and lay it out across the pads and when i'm finished with the beat, i'll save that as a program and then save entire memory to create a project folder. i'll have a folder on the hard drive for project folders and have each of my projects in that folder.

i think this way (to me) will be a very organized way to manage the files on the hard drive.

can you audition from the cf card as well or only from the hard drive?

you would be able to audition from both.

not to mention it'll force a producer not to be lazy in program assignment.
i like this idea, being forced to build new pgms for every song. one issue that i've taken with my own production as of late is an almost home-made preset approach. i've got all these drumkits but feel like i'm not doing as good a job selecting specific drumsounds to each song.

this way will force me to get the right sample and not just duck out and use one of my preset kits.

i will continue to use em as breakbeat material and drum overlaying (great for rolls, fills, etc) and for layering in general in the pads, but with the hd will come the end of that approach for me. it will do me good.
