Difference in swing function and earlier/later function?

Is there really a difference?

If I have swing on (default 50%), and I change it to 52%, is there a difference between making my sound earlier/later 2 spaces in step edit, or earlier/later 2 steps in open quantize window?

I was messing with swing function, and maybe it just seemed different to me cause I was hyped on the idea of it?

Would love to know the truth... it would obviously help me have more control in the long run. I need specific definitions, thanks!

oh, and it wouldn't be too nerdy for me if you break it down into numbers, and step increments, etc... like difference in where my hi hats are placed if there is swing 52% on 1/16 notes and if they are just 1/16 with turning on "earlier" function 2 increments? Is there a difference?

swing moves the 2 beat notes and leaves the 1's unchanged, resulting in a swing to the music,

the timing shift adjusts the selected parts forward or backwards a number of tics equal to what you set.

Thanks Dr. Foo. I noticed the difference, but couldn't quite put my finger on what it was. Yeah I've read the manual, but as we all know it sucks.
