I remember a guy posting that he made his first hip hop beat and how easy it was. He sampled a drum loop from a hip hop record, a bassline from another record, and a melody from another record, and he called it his track.
Making hip hop from samples is fresh because you bring something from elsewhere into the music and contribute to the growth. Sampling sounds from hip hop to make hip hop is incestuous and brings nothing to the music but some weird consistency. It is worse than doing a puffy. Imagine getting big by taking the sounds from Lil jon, kanye, and dre and becoming big on the fruits of their digging? It will be the same sounds slightly modified. It's like something I read in an interview with Pete Rock I think, where everyone was worried about what to sample when they ran out of James Brown breaks.
It's lazy and worse than formulaic, it is biting. Do your own digging, find your own sounds. Using already released hip hop sounds to make hip hop does a disservice to the community.
No biting was a cardinal rule of hip hop. Now people don't really care since hip hop went corporate and corporations have biting down to a science. It changes it from a competition among artists to an anything to get paid winner take all situation.
I can see where people might think this is a double standard, where you can sample from other genres but not hip hop, but it isn't like that. You can sample from hip hop, vocals and such are often flipped, you can flip some other stuff too, but taking a great drum sound is weak, you should find or make your own drum sound that is just as good to raise the level and variety in hip hop. This attack of the clones stuff has gotta go.
