Local off simply seperates the keyboard of a synth from the internal sounds, that's why the sounds don't play.
It's necessary to use it with an external sequencer.
the MIDI from the keyboard is then sent to the external sequencer and redirected back to the internal sounds of the synth, with the channel setting for each track determining which MIDI channel notes are sent to the synth on.

ok I see what your saying after testing it with local off. Now i still can't get midi out from the x8 with or without local. Any setting on the x8 that turns midi out on and off? I just want to figure it out even though I can use my motif to do the triggering.

deegood wrote:what happens when i turn local off is that the SOUND is turned off. I don't know why or if that's suppose to happen. I did figure out the multitimbral situation but haven't got it to send midi-just recieve. I tried to sync them so the x8 would be master to see if it would sync to the mpc with no luck. So maybe the midi out port is shot some how???. Maybe i'm overlooking the right setting.

No, no... the "sound" is NOT turned off. Basically, Local Off just disconnects the "keys" on your Fantom from the sound generator in the Fantom. It kinda "re-routes" the keys to send midi data OUT of the fantom, thus making your fantom DEPENDENT on receiving midi data IN from some other device (in your case the MPC) to trigger the fantom's sounds.
With Local OFF, you should be able to trigger the fantom's sounds with your drum pads on the MPC, assuming you have the correct midi output/channel selected and (in the case of my mpc3000, not sure if this holds true for all) you have "drum" selected as the track "type" on the MPC screen.

I'm fighting this battle too, so if anyone has any more information and has this working between these two... please do chime in.

My experience so far:

I have a friend who has a fantomX7 and a juno-g with an MPC (he actually has a 2500 and a 5000 and we have tried this with my 3000 as well). We can get the MPC and Fantom to talk midi to each other using the methods described above; however, we CANNOT get the fantom to respond to program changes coming from ANY of the three MPC's.
Oddly, (and this may be mentioned above, I don't remember) we had to have the Fantom in "split" mode.
Apparently "split" is now Roland-speak for multi-timbral (THIS required a phone call to Roland tech support to figure out, we had a very hard time finding this in the pdf manual even with "search").
We get this same behaviour from the Juno-G. Not sure what is up. We have checked everywhere we can in the synths to see if they are filtering out program changes and neither of them are.

"Sync" via midi beat clock seems to work fine between the mpc and fantom/juno, if memory serves me correctly - but as you are describing above - this isn't really the way we wanted it to work (he JUST wants to sequence in the MPC and NOT learn his way around the fantom or junog sequencers at this point in time)

FWIW, this works FLAWLESSLY on my motif es (and other synths and sound modules in my collection - various emu, older roland, and novation products - some with multiple banks and some with 128 or less (starting to love those type of boxes more and more when working with the MPC ;) ) The motif tells you the bank msb and lsb numbers in the multi-timbral voice screen, so it makes the tips and suggestions that Rohan offered in that thread link above even easier to deal with. Seems to my friend with the fantom/juno and myself that this may be some weird newer roland thing?
I would also say that i was "surprised" to see that the newer mpc's did not have any better way of dealing with this than did my aging 3k and 60, but that isn't really relevant to this particular thread so I will keep that comment to myself :)

tvent---I believe everything concerning midi is listed under the menu/system/midi. There is where you set the receive and transmit parameters(if i'm not mistaken). That's how i got multitimbral to work in performance mode by turning off remote keyboard switch under receive. I guess you want receive program change set to on. I would rather navigate the screen to find the sounds i want without the mpc doing it for me. I'm convinced that this board has a midi out issue not related to settings and since i'm only borrowing it, i'll just use my motif to trigger sounds and use my mpc as sequencer. It's taking too much time to figure out

Thanks for that info, deegood.
Also, in my post above, please disregard the portion about Local OFF. I somehow missed the two posts directly above where Sovereign explained it and you verified your clarification.

The real advantage to using the MPC to handle program changes is, in my opinion anyway, the ability to just load the sequence back up in the MPC a day, week, month, whatever later and all of the sounds are EXACTLY the same as they were when you made the sequence.
