can someone school me about "keys"?

Whats defined as a moving bassline?

I've been having lots of trouble with adding basslines with more than a note or 2 lately

For anyone else out there with the same problem, I found using your pitch and modulation wheel can atleast add some flavor to your stale basslines

moving bassline? do you know in the summertime by the kinks?

starts with a d minor chord but the bass note moves down on each hit...and then goes to an a major chord and the bass keeps moving down...

basically you chord shape remains but you move the bass around to get new variations on the sound...greg

as a classical pianst I could sit here and tell you the in's and out's of music thoery. But honestly for hip hop that really dosent matter. I would suggest learning some basic theory but really focus on turning your "ear" to here correct chourds and pitches.

I have lots of musical trainig but i rarely use it when im making hip hop beats.(the only time i used theory is on my beat entiled bach hop)

A person with a great ear can go along way. Some of the greatest composers every composed by ear. Once u have that skill down everything else will fall into place. I basically just layer chourds on top of each other that sound ok. Usually i stay within the same key signature that i start out with. You can change from a major scale to a relative minor for a bridge in a beat....
