Isn't this heresy on Akai's part?? FF hex is meant to be the "System Reset" byte!

It's true that FF is the reset byte in a MIDI data stream (i.e., over a wire). But in a MIDI file (SMF), it is used to start a Proprietary message. This is part of the standard for SMFs, so Akai is using it correctly. I think the idea is that Reset is something that would never make sense in a MIDI file.

I was forgetting you were talking about an SMF.

Are SysEx strings sent by an external unit to the MPC4000 only understood under the appropiate SCREENS or generally accepted?

For instance, if I want to trim SAMPLE START and END POINT via SysEx, do I need to call the SAMPLE/TRIM SCREEN before
this operation?

So far, SysEx implementation seems to be pretty comprehensive and I thinking of taking control of the 4000 by Doepfer's REGELWERK or DREHBANK. Especially, I'd like to speed up sample trimming and control CUTOFF and RESONANCE of specific PADS of a DRUM PROGRAM.

No you don't have to have a particular screen called up on the MPC4000,
although pay attention to which Multi, etc, the commands are set to work on
(i.e. the currently selected on, or there are commands to select a particular multi)

Is there any free WIN XP program to send SysEx strings. Ideally, with fader-like mouse control?
My WWW search led to nowhere.
Testing the functions software-wise before buying a hardware controller would be nice.

I use MIDI Ox to do diagnostic MIDI work.

If you want to make a visual interface on screen for sending complex MIDI then try IRCAM's Max.

Thanks for that hint. MidiOx is very generous and will at least allow for some fundamental testing of the SysEx strings.

It seems that i'm stuck on the data 1 and 2 as you were before. Neither do i understand this part.
Can you tell me what you did to get the logic sysex fader to work.....
Those two columns in the PDF are really confusing to me.
