Need help finding out whether my MPC1000 has OS1

Just bought a 2nd hand MPC and not sure whtehr it has JJ OS1.

It Boots up and says

'NEW OS' Version 4.63.

Could you please let me know if this is JJ, and which JJ.

Also if this is JJ, can I upgrade it to the latest release (I have no password, as I assume the last owner bought the password, installed it but didn't keep it for future reference)

From that number I would also guess it means OS1 is installed. Go to the save screen and see if you can save. If not it has been installed to try it out but not bought (JJOS is fully functional but you can not save without purchase.) If you can save it seems you have a licence version and if this is the case the password is permanently stored within the machine so you can upgrade to latest version without having to retrieve the password.

Do I need to back up my Files on the Internal HD first?

Did you check it was the full version and you could save projects? Otherwise it might not really be worth it.

Yeah from the sounds of it, you have OS1. Check the main screen;

If it looks like this -

That's OS1


In comparison, this is the free 3.08 version;

And this is OS2



You should be able to upgrade to the latest version of OS1 without needing a password, as once you enter the password for the specific OS the MPC apparently remembers it. So if you upgrade to OS2 but then downgrade, you don't need to enter a password. I've never tried this for myself though!


And remember to see if you can save projects lol. Technically all the OS's are 'free' but you pay for the privilege to save - its a clever way of demoing the product.
