depends on your needs i guess. i had the mpc60II, the 3000, then the 2000, the 2000XL, finally got this lil ole 1K a couple years back.almost immediately sold off my 2KXL,never even bothered to back up my old 2k programs offa the zips...i made standard mpc fare till jjos , then i noticed my beats came out quicker, and so more closely represented what i had in mind when i started to pound out the beat..
main reason i prefer a 1k to the 2k5 :
1>the 1k is like a phone book. 3.5 kilos and fits in my dj bag nicely.
2>dont really need all those q-links since only one at a time is really useful...cant use 2 note on controls at once)
3>don't really need the full size pads since i got enough motor control to hit the smaller padz..

4>it costs less to replace when someone pours a drink on it while i'm performing..
5>it's just so convienent and small and versatile without being completely crippled like the 500....
oh gosh forgot the original posters question...:
i think the people who use akai os are ; either them who don't know about jjos, or those who don't want to bother learning a new os..
