The Death of an Mpc

My beloved Mpc2k is entering its later years. The Lcd screen has 8 vertical lines in it, some pads short out, and disk errors are becoming more and more common. Its rather depressing seeing this classic machine slowly fizzle into a pile of electronic waste.

So my question is...

Any advice for getting every last bit of use out of this machine?

I heard that the reason screens fail is because of the heat generated by the MPC. Would installing a computer fan to help cool it possibly help? or is it not worth it?

Would opening it up and doing some general cleaning help, mostly the pad sensors?

spend some money and send it to forat to get fixed.

or get a new, modern mpc.

changing the floppy and tact sensors can be made by you easily,the screen is a little bit harder to change...

but it ain`t magic.....forat IMO is way overpriced.

Give it to me for free and it will rest in peace ... Or you can sell it to some idiot and get a newer model.

Heat can also be generated trhu havin the equiptment on for too many hours/days without powering off.
This can also happen to the newer mpc's. But its most common with the older models i think.

if the pad sesors are getting bad you can replace them.. this also goes for the Lcd.. a lot of users on this forum have replaced them without the need of paying for the reparation except for the new lcd screen.. this section need some step-by step tutoring with repairing the mpc's ( for those good enough on the elctrical/tecnical side of this hardware equipment)

both the lcd screen and pad sensor sheet are very easy to replace. if you have ever worked on a pc you can replace those parts in the mpc no sweat. open up the machine and see what it looks like inside there.

by the time you replace all the parts youll have spent enough to go on ebay and get another, I would just sell it for parts or as is and get another 2k or 2kxl, if you decide to sell it for parts hit me up. i'll buy some off you.

If you haven't cleaned the pads and the pad sensors yet, I would go ahead and do that to see if it's going to fix the issue with the shorting pads. It's worth a shot to see if they get any better before you spend any money.

Buying a used MPC and parting it out might seem cheaper... but whose to say how long that LCD and floppy drive from the used machine will last...

well, the lcd isn't likely to die on him in an instant, it will fade out...

I feel your pain!
My right pad on the bottom row died completely, awhile back...Its an anomaly to me being that ive kept the machine out of harms way and never abused it or hardly used it enough for it to poop out on me.
But i guess thats what were dealing with when a company puts out a new mpc every 6 months! They keep their customers coming back for repairs, its built in security i suppose.

i would sell it for parts and get a new one on ebay..you can get one for 200-300 now..it's crazy how much they're decreasing in value..

As far as your pads go,

Open the unit. You'll see where the Ribbon portion of the Force Sensor (The pad sensor) connects to the board via a press in header.

Pull it out (I think it might have a small plastic piece that pushes down to lock it in, if so, use a small fine tip flathead or something to carefully lift the lock)

Clean the header and the ribbon contacts with Deoxit, or alchohol, rubbing, not Bicardi 151 (Though it'd probably work)

Put her back in. Many times, finiky Force Sensors in these things are due to corroded, poor connections. Remember these are old.

Same goes for the screen. Could be the same thing.

If you're even crafty'er, you can remove the screen completely and find where the ribbon makes contact with the LCD panel, and often times there are poor connections as the glue losens over time. A hair dryer and something to push them down lightly with can somethimes re-seat the connection and have your lines gone, (They are usually caused by a bad contact of this cable to the LCD panel)

And if you should sell, sell it to me The guy who told you how you might resurrect it

Thanks a bunch for the info! Ive read several places that one has to to demagnitize his body first somehow, before poking around in the mpc's internal parts.
