I'm not really sure but maybe you could download the latest Akai firmware from the actual site itself and put it on the CF card and install it, but that's if the firmware is on the site in the first place.
I'm pretty sure you're doing something wrong but I would recommend buying OS1 anyway.
This is because-
the pad sensitivity on it is immense - when I upgraded I put it to max sensitivity and now i can just push it down rather than hit it and it still makes a sound (having full level on of course). i dont know if this is an OS1 feature, me not having 3.08 configured correctly or something unique to my mpc, but the sensitivity is PERFECT now.
the operating system is OVERHAULED - before i didnt think i needed it because i didnt think i needed the features (things like SIMULT and things that i kept seeing confused me frankly so it was a bit intimidating to go into) but now i have them and use them, i would honestly never go back. you can also install OS2 to play with it, so if you dont need to save but just record into Pro Tools or something, it's a good way to skip paying for it....
you're from the uk like me, so make the most of the exchange rate lol.
since all you pay for is the ability to save, i think you can install it, try it, and then go back to the Akai OS or whatever you prefer.
