I'm currently thinking about buying either of those too.I use to think about getting sp 606 cheap off ebay. The main reason I didin't go for it was 8 voice polyphony (and only 4 in stereo) and a 4 track sequencer.
I wouldn't choose it as my main piece of equipment. I heard that it has some very good and interesting effects, but this polyphony thing is just terrible.

Many years later and having had all kinds of samplers one of which the sp-606, I must say the 8 voice polyphony on the 606 isn't much of an issue actually!! By the way, you are wrong about 4 in stereo, it has 8 whether mono or stereo.
It's perhaps difficult to believe, but I actually did not ever even run into the 8 voice polyphony limit and I made some pretty complicated beats. You can do a lot with resampling to work around that limitation anyways.
Sure it's not an MPC1000 as far as the sequencing goes and it has only 4 tracks, but using it's Song Mode it's very possible to make great beats with the 606 as centerpiece. It's perhaps one of the best entry-level samplers, especially if you pay like only 300$ for it these days.
Also and I am not joking, the 606 easily beats the crap out of most MPC's FX. In terms of usefulness, usage and overall features I would rate the SP-606 a phat 80/100 score.

Right now I'm using the 606 because I had a little accident with my MPC500, which is under repairs.
606 is a dope machine. You can adjust the velocity as well as the sensitivity of the pads so you can either pound on it or give it light taps with a pinky finger. The sampler fattens the sound you sample in. 45 effects plus master effects. 8 polyphony but its got mute groups. You can sample via USB off the PC. Dbeam is nuts.
My only gripe is that you can't adjust the points in auto-chop like in the 505 and the timestretch is sketchy. And you can't resample your patterns, but however, you can resample your pad performance.

I love my MPC. I wish I could attach my 1000 to my stomach steel-drum style, or even my chest Darth-Vader/Bobby Mcferrin style, but, my sp-202's effects beat the mess out the crap FX on my MPC. I would guess the 606 would have equal or better effects than the 202?

SP-606 got 3+ hours of sampling time with a 512mb compact flash.
Go figure.
