Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

for as long as i can remember, anytime i transfer samples from the 4000 to my pc via usb/ak.sys, there is a 50/50 chance it'll stop midway, insisting that its been unplugged. i noticed a few others have voiced this but seem unable to find a solution. is there ANY way to remedy this bane of my production? (short of buying a mac)

Not a hundred percent certain, but through word of mouth I heard switching to an older O.S. would suffice

hmm. well its certainly worth a try. i am running 1.70 at the moment.
side question: is there any risk of damaging or losing files saved on my hardrive by upgrading (or downgrading) the OS?

Ak.sys dousnt work for me because I use windows vista - just cop a 4 gb usb stick and throw whatever you want to sample on there onto the 4000.. I have a 4 gb usb stick with alot of my favorite drum sounds in there specific folders - and have a samples folder where I just throw a bunch of samples in and audition the samples in the load screen when deciding what I want to flip...

**** ak.sys - dont downgrade just for ak.sys.

Akai's Ak.SYs USB drivers are SH1TE!

Badly tested badly written rubbish.

I think they just don't work properly with certain motherboard USB controllers/chipsets.

I do not believe OS level on the MPC4000 is anything to do with it (OS 1.71 was the last and had the most features and least bugs)

One tip to help reliability is to back up all your data, reformat the MPC4000 hard drive (using the MPC's own menus) and then put all the data back on again.
Mine still crashes when it wants to, though!

all i ever use it for it to transfer entire song samples on to my pc. the memory stick thing seems like the best idea, thing is the usb port in the front by the phone jack has never worked either (haha! its an oldie, bought used.) so im gona have to crack it open and replace the usb port or something.

lol yeah, who can forget the mendacious adverts that Akai Unprofessional Inc put on in 2002
when the MPC4000 was launched, showing the machine apparently linked to VGA monitor
giving big screen colour display of all the program edit screens etc -
when of course it was actually a PC running Ak.Sys.

I was thinking to throw ak.sys away, but on my Macbook it's working somehow. I've menaged to copy 5 GB of samples to my HDD, but it skipped a few files so I had to copy it manualy one by one.
Anyway I've tried to export my whole beat which was recorded through main outs to my 8GB Kingston pendrive with no effect. I've tried it with 3 beats. Average time of beat was about 2.30 minutes. It goes without problems with shorter samples. I have 4GB Kingston pendrive also and I didn't tried it on this one, so until I do that, is there anything I should know about exporting files to pendrives?

I have a 8GB card in my blackberry, and connect it to the 4K via USB

Pretty dope cause I can go online and snatch anything outta my email, or from online, or sites, or whatever and load it up on the MP from my phone!!!!!!

hella dope!

And just yesterday I called my DJ buddy and had him rip an old chunk off a vinyl and shoot it to my email, minutes later I had it right off my phone onto the 4K..... never evenhad to unplug the phone from the 4K

Yezzir.... the blackberry'd 4K

I was stoked......
