Share your knowledge on these two classic MPCs

I posted this information on the MPC3000 group on another forum.

I've reposted here for the convenience of members who are not signed to this other forum.

When an out of order condition occurs during the MPC3000's usual
operation an error message is displayed...

Usually this error message is meaningful and you're still able to
return to normal machine operation.

For example. If you run out of sequence memory during normal
operation of your MPC3000 then the following "error message"
or "attention message" will be displayed:

_________________________________________

============= Attention ================
There is no more sequence memory
available. Please delete some
sequences.

=========================================
<Exit>
_________________________________________

In the event that an unknown error occurs during the normal operation
of your MPC3000 then you will receive the following message:

________________________________________
============= System Error =============
Sorry, but a software bug of type <XX>
caused all memory to be lost. Please
write down as much as you can remember
of what happened that caused this screen
to appear. Call or send this information
to your Akai distributor.

What does this all mean in simplest terms possible ?

The MPC3000 is a complex condition driven piece of musical machinery.

It's usual operation is solid.

If an error condition occurs that is outside the machines operating
system capability to deal with in an effective manner then you will
receive the message as stated above.

The machine can not return to action when an error defined by such a
condition has occurred.

MPC3000's need to be cold started to escape from such error conditions.

A brief description of each of these undocumented error numbers lies
below:

<XX> is the ERROR type:

< 0> CPU INSTRUCTION ERROR
< 2> CPU INSTRUCTION ERROR
< 3> CPU INSTRUCTION ERROR
< 4> CPU INSTRUCTION ERROR
< 5> CPU INSTRUCTION ERROR
< 8> CPU TIMER ERROR
< 9> CPU TIMER ERROR
< A> CPU TIMER ERROR
< B> SCSI OR FLOPPY CONTROLLER ERROR
< C> MIDI PORTS ERROR
< D> MIDI PORTS/FRONT PANEL ERROR
< E> SMPTE/FSK/AUDIOTRIG/CLOCK ERROR
<10> SYS FILE LOADING ERROR
<11> SYS FILE LOADING ERROR
<12> SYS FILE LOADING ERROR
<13> SYS FILE LOADING ERROR
<14> SYS FILE LOADING ERROR

The most common error of the above type that MPC3000 users have
experienced at some point or another is <11>.

<11> indicates:

1: A corrupted or in appropriate SYS file on the floppy disk that
you're trying to boot your MPC3000 with.

2: That you are trying to boot your MPC3000 with a SYS file that is
too new when compared to the one in the machines ROM. Machines fitted
with operating systems 3.03 or 3.08 in ROM can exhibit this issue
when trying to boot from a 3.11 or 3.12 floppy disk.

Continual problems in the above regard can be solved in most cases by
ensuring that you have the latest operating system for your machine
installed in ROM.

An error of < 5> and <13> in alternate sessions indicates possible
following scenarios:

1: That you are trying to boot your MPC3000 with a SYS file that is
too new when compared to the one in the machines ROM. Machines fitted
with operating systems 3.03 and 3.08 can exhibit this issue when
trying to boot from a 3.11 or 3.12 floppy disk.

2: Machine is running an old or early BETA ROM version.

3: Machine is exhibiting faults within the SRAM and WRAM section that
could be caused by some other issues. ( refer to a technician )

4: Machine is exhibiting faults within the EPROM section that could
in fact be caused by other issues. ( refer to a technician )

Information listed above is only a general guide.

The other error messages are not likely to appear very often if at
all if the machine is upgraded with latest OS in ROM.

If your machine is failing regularly then take it to a technician who
is MPC capable and they will diagnose the failure related issues.

That's all folks.

Rohan.

Damn dude, Thanks,

That is in a text file in my MPC 60 Folder (place of honor...) from now on.

Thanks for the knowledge.

It should all be consistant for an MPC60/ASQ10 too, regardless of OS version.

Cool.

Rohan.
