this is just a suggestion, im not a techy so i cant confirm this:
Maybe the DSP processor in the MPC1000 uses "dynamic voice allocation". which basically means it can have a maximum number of 32 voices depending on the complexity of the sound (how many filters/envelopes/etc.) and sequence.
the only reason im suggesting this is because a synth company (Waldorf) did something similar: They released a keyboard called Q which had 32 voices, regardless of how complex the sounds were, like the MPC2000. Then, they later released the much cheaper MicroQ, which had "25 voices", but it used voice allocation and had less DSP power, so once you started playing complex sounds on it the notes would be cut-off or not triggered, like the MPC1000.
