sounds sketchy...anyway, i found a video on youtube that instructed me on how to remove the casing. I did as much and discovered that a lot of the buttons were broken (i hope that makes sense). Therefore, you think i'm still going to have to solder or is it possible that I could just replace the buttons?

the buttons consist of 2 parts. One is the actual button you press and the second is the tact switch which is under the plastic button. You can always try to power it up with the cover off and press the tact switch to see if shift works. Looks like you may need to replace both. Ive done 10 tact switches on my 1k so far. not all that hard.

If you have to many buttons not working properly on your MPC, you might aswell change the whole right PCB board.

I used to have a 2000XL and I never had to replace any parts on it. On my 1k Ive done almost every tact switch on the main board. Its sad because I love the machine but I hate hate hate Akai
