Just a few quick questions for people making beats just on the ASR 10.

1.Do you guys do you drum track just on the one instrument, or do you copy the instrument a few times so you can lay your hats, snare, kicks and perc on separate tracks ?.

2. If you boot from a Zip does this effect the fuctions you can use ?.

You go into step edit and place the events where you want them to be within the 96ppq. You can record straight
into the quantize or you can go timing off and manually nudge ticks where you want them to be. There is always a
before/after comparison after recording and you have the choice "keep old/new" and you can hear both and compare.

The whole machine is more manual than people would like.

well said, it is very manual.

however, there is a way to nudge all events forward/backward...well sort of.

if you go to CMD>Track>Shift Track By Clocks

the drawback is that you can't choose which keys to move, it will just apply it to the whole track.

what i have been doing is putting all my shuffle stuff on one track, and shifting as needed.

the extra manual work doesn't bother me, i like the way the sequencer sounds it has a unique stutter to it.

1. it depends on if i am using the asr to sequence. if i am, i will either put each drum on it's own instrument (snare, kick, hat) or like i said in my last post, i will have one instrument with all the drums that are on time, and one for the shuffle stuff so i can nudge it. if i'm using an external sequencer then i have them all on one instrument it doesn't matter.

2. no it doesn't. zip's boot up a lot quicker and load/save a lot quicker also. i would definitely recommend getting your asr with a scsi.

I'm telling you, man........
This is a great machine; the things you can do are only limited by your imagination.
No more questions, just buy the damn thing already

i did  + output expander as i am feeding my summing mixer directy with the stuff... no further AD degradation

what i hear bout the sequencer is sick and my taste so far, i like the trick the beatbreaks mentioned... very clever in fact

i just hope the seq is solid and stable and can handle the master sequencing (logic8 + evtl. SE1 if i need to sequence the synth at all)

i really really dig the sampling/ediing of this thing! similar to the SP1200 with its sliders, way more intuitive than freakin mpc1000 wich drove me mad (yes with jjos2)

i screw the mpc3k plan for now... will see how the sequencer works and if cool, get a padkontrol and if the seq. is not sufficient i ll try to get a cheap maybe beat up mpc60 simply for sequencing and a touch of 12bit here and there.

hm, got another one if someone feels like elaborating,

how does the whole arranging thing work with the ASR seq.

i.e. Sequence A is repeated 30 times, than Sequence B (lets say reffrain or suppn) replaces A and play 5 times and again A 10 times and than some Bridge Seq. C 1 time

etc etc?

can you do such (complex) stuff in there without big hassle?

yes i am gonna start reading the manual soon 8)

yeh well sure i will... put it seems there are many vetrean with years of experience who know this beats insideout, so i am happy i i can snap some tricks first hand if ya know...

basicaly i just wanted to know in the above Q, if it IS possible to do these things or if the Seq d be to primitive.

The things you mentioned are possible and more!!

Check this forum for any further questions you may have:

The search sucks, though

This is what I do; I type the following in google:

This way you get direct links to specific topics.

Totally forgot about that, thanks for reminding me. :D

Not sure if its been mentioned yet, but I have to say that the manual for the asr-10 is nothing short of a masterpiece, and a million miles away from the random collection of words put together by the drunken monkeys at Akai's technical publications unit.

You actually want to read it more than once so that you absorb the info, not struggle through it because you've stumped up money for the unit...

quick question-

my asr-10 is basically on it's way and i was wondering, what is the best, most efficient and organized way to store samples and drums after i sample them. id like to make some sample libraries so that if im working on a beat i can just pull from it instead of doing what ive been doing and find new samples while im making a beat and adding them. id like to just have a whole bunch that i can look through, and have a place where i can store all of my samples.

is there a way to access files from different floppy disks (or whatever this uses - separate question) while your working? or would you need to load everything to one disk or whatever and just use that.

ok be patient (but trust me - your excitement should be worth it) :)

Well I've just got into using the MACRO function - basically you can select around 30 odd 'locations' on your disk/cf card and assign them to a macro. Now all these macros go into a file and you need to load this file in. Once you've done that however - you can press LOAD and type in a number and it should take you to that location. This saves you from constantly having to drill down directories and back up again.

Anyway - it works well for me - and Im making an effort not to hit too many buttons on this thing :), skipping around using the jog wheel on my 2500 has nothing on this.

Drunk - Take time to read the manual. I have a lot of sympathy for people struggling to get info out of the AKAI manual - there is no excuse with the asr-10 one.
