Please help, my mpc500 freeze up!

Hi im glad to see some mpc forums! well i bought my mpc 500 one week ago and im starting to have some troubles with this thing! every time i start it up with the original cf in, it freeze up until i put it away. The same happens when i try to save or load something from the cf 128mb memory. What the hell is happening? i allready checked the cf port and there aren;t any damaged parts. it still looking brand new. What can i do, should i buy a new memory?

Im right now in miami and i want to go back to my country with this trouble fixed, please help me. Do u know where can i go with the unit to look for more help?

First make sure your OS is upgraded to the current version 1.31. If that doesn't help then I would try a different card.

all right, i will buy a brand new compract flash memory, because this one dont let me do anything . i hope it works. but just in case that it freeze up again witht he new memory, how can i upgrade the o.s without using the memory port?

Oh, thats right. You've got to get your CF working first dont you.

You can probably get a CF from walmart or someplace where you can return it if thats not the problem.

Have you tried reformating your CF card?

You can copy all the contents off of the card either with a card reader or by connecting and accessing your card with a USB cable connected to your 500. Which basically turns your 500 into a CF card reader.

Then copy the contents of your CF into a folder on your desktop and reformat the card with your computer. See if that helps the freezing problem.

If it does, then download the OS upgrade .bin from: http://www.akaipro.com/mpc500# and put that on your card.
Follow the instructions from the same page where you downloaded it and flash the upgrade.

Then I would reformat the card one more time usinf the 500 reformat function to ensure the best compatibility, and then copy your card contents from your desktop back onto your card.

ok i just bought a brand new sandisk 2gb and did all u said and it actually worked until i try to format the cf from the mpc500. Its says "format invalid" and then freeze up again with the Do it button lighted up. What im duing wrong?

please help!!!!!!!!!!!! i cant start it up with the cf plugged in because it freeze up. I just can run it with the .bin file loaded on the memory (holding shift at the same time) and then i just say "wrong cd format" or something like that and start up normaly. Then i got mode load and format cart for second time and it said system error and freeze down again....

Ok now it seems to be working ! i all ready formated the cart in the mpc , lets try loading files and see how it goes. But i still curiuos about that...why it said those errores while formating??

So I think you said that you got the OS to upgrade right?
And it seems to be working?
I wouldn't worry about what caused the errors now if you've got them fixed.
Maybe you had an old OS that was buggy.

I wouldn't have expected that reformatting the card again in the 500 would cause it to freeze again if you've gotten the OS update to install first.
But if it does than you can skip that step since it isn't really necessary.

BTW, you have to format the card in FAT file system not NTFS.

That usually was selected automatically when I've reformatted the CF on a PC, but you might have to select it manually for a new card.



Reinstalling the OS probably reset these settings anyway, but it wouldn't hurt to run the "reinitialize to factory default" routine I guess:

1. turn mpc on while holding the erase/undo button.

2. release the button after the display shows "__MB memory installed"

thanks for the helping robthom!! the freeze up trouble seems to be fixed while starting...but i still having one more... can u please help me..
I loaded wave sound data into the cf memory without any problem (i used the sounds from the 128mb cf memory). The trouble comes wen i try to load more than 2 or 3 samples. The first 2 works perfectly but then (after assigning the samples in any pad) the screem display : "Unknow file format" and it can't load that file. Then i go back to the main screen (seq screen) and try it once again.... after a few attemps the mpc freeze up displaying "loading...."
Whenever i turn it off the problem is gone,but just until i load 2 or 3 samples.... what im doing wrong?
i dont understand why it says unknow file format at the first time and then whenever i load that same sample in other order it works

That is very strange. I would think that the samples from your old CF may be corrupted. But the way that you can load the same sample in a different order is strange. They may still in fact be corrupted in some strange way.

I would try to use some samples that did not come off your old 128 CF and see if that fixes the problem. Any .wav format works as a sample. But here are some free samples that a guy made:

Take your old samples back off of your CF and store them back on your desktop like before. Then put the new ones on and try to load them again. Also before you load any samples, load one program first and select "clear memory - yes" to clear the memory. You can also choose to "load with sounds" if you like.

If that fixes it than your old ones got corrupted on that bad card and I would delete them so that they dont mess up anything else.

BTW: do you have the 128 memory expansion installed?
