Tutorial: Using Logic Pro 8 With Your MPC4000

Ok, I hope this wasn't asked before.
Everytime I try to use Logic it provides a new bunch of problems.
1. When I click on a track it plays the notes I've recorded plus something that I really dislike notes of additional tracks. :/
2. To play instrument on my keyboard I need to arm the track for recording, but what about Reason tracks? I've made 2 Reason instruments and it's working fine.
I decided that I will use additional NN-XT so I made new NN-XT (midi channel 9) obviously bypassing Reason mixer, making new auxilarry channel strip in Logic and made new midi track, then selected NN-XT 3 in Logic library, armed for recording and it plays melody from midi channel 5.
3. When I select different tracks in Logic in many cases it makes my record icons blank so I have to highlight the tracks again. Is there a way to stick it or something like this? I know I can make a group, but that's not what I'm looking for.
Somebody help me, again Logic overwhelming me.

This will totally improve my workflow. : )

I have followed the steps outlined and can successfully trigger the various instruments in Logic by altering the midi channel on the MAIN page of my MPC 1000.

Where i run into trouble is when I now go to record a sequence on my MPC1000.

When I go to record the MPC successfully records the note data ( it is there in Step Edit view) with the appropriate sounds from Logic being triggered ( i can hear them on playback - they are recorded into the MPC) however my metronome on the MPC has gone AWOL?

There is no metronome count in prior to recording so i have nothing to play to. ?

I checked out the Click/Metronome page and the settings are the usual ones.

Count in: REC only
In Play: NO
Rate: 1/4
In Rec: Yes

I am bamboozled.

Anyone have idea as to what might have happened?

Regarding the metronome issue you are having, its not something I've experienced myself.

But if I remember correctly, somewhere in this thread someone else had a similar problem.

I can see no reason why your metronome would stop working, but then I don't have an MPC1000 either...

I realize I am late on this, but i could sure use some help. I have a Mpc 2000, I'm trying to use this tutorial to figure out how to set up my MPC with logic pro 8. I also have an Axiom pro 49, and a Motif Es rack, and a focusite saffire. I was just using everything as separate instruments and tracking out in Logic without midi, but I would love to learn how to establish a better, more productive work flow. I'm not that skilled with midi set up, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Ideally I would love to sequence with the MPC and logic vst's, and also have the ability to sync the mpc with Logic when i want to record sounds out of it. Is that even possible? I apologize for my ignorance in advance.

Go to the first post in this thread and begin by following the instructions, this tip really does work!

There are some assumptions about having things set up properly to begin with so you'd do well to conquer those first before beginning the tutorial.

They are as follows:

1. You are able to input midi to your MPC using a keyboard and/ or the pads.
2. You are able to monitor the output of the MPC and Logic together.
3. You know the basics of navigating both the MPC and Logic.
4. The midi out of the MPC is routed into and being received by Logic.

If you can satisfy these conditions you're good to go.

i already figured out using the logic as a sound module w/out touchin the environment. i plan on gettin a novation zero so i can use the tap tempo to change the bpm in logic instead of havin to use my mouse all the time. i think using a tap tempo gives u better "on the fly" usefulness when using the mpc to control logic. i have most of my sounds and drums in the exs24 so all i do is load them up and bang em out. not being able to use the tap tempo on the mpc1k to control the tempo in logic is the only hamper. im runnin the jj os 3.09 which is cool wit the lil changes it has but i def think im gonna get the 2xl due to the more flexibility of syncing the two together wit beat clock so wh i decide to do a beat in the 1k i can make the mpc the master. the main question i have now is whats good software sounds to use in logic where logic wont start actin up. i knoe in logic 7 i tried to use sampletank as sounds in logic midi wise and it started trippin on me. is logic 8 stable with that now by checkin the multi-timbral box and if so what sounds does anyone recommend?

1. If you are using Logic as a sound module you are only concerned with the tempo of the MPC sequencer.

2. If you want your MPC to be master in a synced set-up, you can only use MIDI timecode. Logic Pro 8 does not receive beat clock (MIDI clock), but can send it. As you will know, MIDI timecode does not respond to tempo changes, it locks to absolute time.

3. Getting an MPC2000XL will change NOTHING! If you want the MPC to be master and send MIDI clock to Logic for tempo control what you need to do is DOWNGRADE TO LOGIC PRO 7 which does receive MIDI clock pulses.

4. Your 'main question' regarding Sampletank and the stability of Logic Pro 8 does not belong in this thread, take that elsewhere.

I'll try to be more specific this time. 2 questions. It seems everything with Logic is fine now. There is a little problem with Reason: it automatically layer my track from Reason with the currently selected track in Logic, be it Logic track or Reason. I record midi notes into MPC4K and the track is clean, so I really don't know where is the problem.
My second question should be easy, as it is not really a problem - I have say 5 armed tracks for recording and I want to arm 6th track for recording. When I select 6th track it is automatically armed for recording but it cancels all the rest tracks, so I must start to arm all the tracks again and this is completely random. Sometimes it simply work as I want it to and sometimes it cancels all the rest tracks leaving me with one armed currently selected track. Any idea?

When I make Audio track I can select if it will be armed for recording or if I should do it manually, but when I make Software Instrument track or External Midi track it is automatically armed. How can I change this?

When I am doing all the steps You wrote in first post it won't change the sound it plays the first techno drum kit all the time even when I am changing the MIDI out in MPc from 1b,2b,3b,4b etc ... it keeps on playing only the first instrument in the Logic why is that?

did you change that auto demix setting.........?

yes, I did change that but nothing happend I can still hear only the first instrument.
When I am changing the midi chanels in MPC (MIDI: 1b,2b,3b...) it's still plays only the first one 1b
Becouse I am connected with the Logic through MIDI out B

Maybe you've missed out a step?

The auto-demix setting is used to ensure that incoming midi data is split according to the channel it arrives on.

This allows us to use different instruments in Logic (assigned to different midi receive channels) at the same time.

loved this post on this matter, but quick question everything is working just fine for me except for the last step when you said as i switch the midi channels on the mpc the instruments in logic are supposed to change also, im working with logic 9 and for some reason thats not working for me, no matter what channel i go to its the same default techo kit, the only was the instruments change is if i unenable all the tracks and switch threw the diff tracks in logic, and by doing that i noticed the channels dont even have to be switch on the mp and the instruments change....and im doing something wrong here?
