when i lay down my kicks....

wondering if you guys can tell me....or tell me what i'm doing wrong. as a few of you have said, the best way to learn the MPC, is to read through the manual. BUT, i can't help but have a mess around on it too. NOW, heres my problem (don't know if this is going to make sense)

when i play the drums, before the snare i use a kick (doesn't just do it on the kicks, can be snares too etc) and i hit it for example 4 times really quickly, but on play back when i listen to the kick, it doesn't "Move" as fast as it did when i played it....It's confusing the hell outter me....Anyone know what i'm doing wrong....or the wrong setting its on?

peep your quantize........its probably set at 1/8 when it sounds like you're looking for it to snap to the 16th or 32nd

Just start pushin buttons......or you can ask the MPC nicely, its should answer back

what you mean start pressing buttons...?

if you sqeeze your fists together and the lightly hitting the buttons on the mpc it should start working if that doesnt work look in the quantize mode

You asked a general question, and based on what I interpreted to be your real question I posed a solution to your issue. The rest is on you to figure out. Who knows I could be completely wrong. But what you asked sounds like it has something to do with the frequency at which the MPC is recording MIDI data (i.e. how fast you hit the pads vs. do you get the playback of the performance you desired during playback). If you hit the pads fast and it records say HALF of the number of times you tap or hit them, then its probably not set at the correct quantization value.

Set your quantize to 1/16th, do not set to 1/16 (3). You do this by pressing the timing correct (tc) button. I find this to be the best quantize option for beginners, & I believe its the default quantize setting that MPC's come with.
As far as getting drums just right, you need to have the right tempo set. I do this by getting every 2nd metronome tick to tick where you'll want to lay your snare. If its off, change the tempo until its where you want it. I usually feel it out with where my heads nodding to the beat or melody. You can change your metronome settings by clicking metronome. I would suggest you set it to "on" when "in play". Once the metronome tick is where you want it, turn it off, or you could lay down your snare, then turn it off completely. Its whatever you prefer. After that, lay your drums & report back asap on if this helped. good luck !

Or set quantize/timing correct to off... even 16th/32nd quantize sometimes doesn't capture the beauty of a well placed beat.

Well honestly 96ppqn sometimes isn't enough, but that's what the MPC500 has so you kind of have to live with that limitation. One trick is to double your tempo to get more p's for your qn though.
