thats a funny one, i can ONLY record the Seuences from ASR KEYS or in general with ASR sounds when the MPC Midi type is set to DRUM... not MIDI

so i fear that may not be the issue !?

Finally got hold of an ASR-10 from ebay.co.uk.

Been looking for at least 18 months until I saw this one come up with a few accessories (paid approx $720.00).

Ok, so I've got the ASR and checked everything I could.

Loaded up some instruments and banks, just having a quick look around the board.

Its got SCSI, digital I/O, 16Mb, 6 output expander, CD-Rom , OS 3.53 and of course the Musicians manual.

It's a '92 model, in very good condition still with box and foam inserts.

But I do have a quick question for the ASR stalwarts, which would help me a great deal as I tread new ground.

File Management

Dude gave me a bunch of floppies, CD-R's and Zip disc's with instruments and banks saved all over the place.

Quite frankly it's a mess which I hope to improve upon from the very beginning, so...

Can I get some thoughts on the most efficient way to save, load and transfer samples/ instruments/ banks?

Bear in mind that Im set up to work with .wav files in the MPC4000 and Logic Pro 8 and may want to load the .wavs into either of those or use the ASR. I have the SCSI CD-ROM already, trying to keep the wiring minimal and use less power outlets. I currently need two mains sockets to power the system, thats enough really.

Please only offer your opinion if you are an ASR veteran and really know what's up.

ehm, no veteran here but you seem not very informed, so i can tell you some basic if i am allowed

i dont know if i got you right, but there is absolutly NO using wavs in the ASR i am sure you know that, + i would absolutly NOT advice you to convert the sounds and bypassing the ASR sampling engine... you really would miss the whole point that way i you ask me.



saving/storage/management is pretty straight forward... you just sample your sounds, chop them up, and spread them over 1 or several Instruments.

than you save them as Instruments... thats all

(HINT* watch the size of the Instruments, erase eveyrthign you dont need, as you may run into the problem of not being able to load more than 1 Instr. otherwise)

storage device, best is a SCSI CF Card Reader (MCDISK 1 or 2) aka Sprus RD300 works and is what i am using here
cheaper aternative would be a SCSI Hard Drive


one thing to remember is, the ASR can ony handle folders with up to 38 files (for example Instruments) so you have to do some folders in advanve ( i couldnt find out how yet, as Chicken sys free did read the files of my CF Card, but i wasnt able to do anything with them or make new folders......... LAMP?)

Fastest way out of this I reckon would be to work with ZIP drives. In a perfect world, you'd get a CF card reader from SCSI4Samplers but I wanted to get one and was told that they don't do them any more. If you were lucky, you'd see one for sale somewhere but to be honest good luck with that.

I've got both a CF card reader and a ZIP drive. In the UK, you'd have no worries getting a zip drive - but from what I hear - be careful about getting the 250mb model as there have been some problems. You should have no worries with a 100mb model. Get a few disks - and you're away.

Of course there's something to think about (it is the ASR-10 after all) and thats how you're going to get files from your PC to your ASR. Unless you have a SCSI interface on your PC you're shafted (remember you'll need a ZIP drive with SCSI connection). I've heard that some of these 'combination drives' (USB&SCSI) work well, but can't be certain. In any case - Im considering getting another zip drive with USB connectivity for my PC. You can get a zip drive for around 30-40 (and even less on eBay).

So in an nutshell, if you were super-lucky I'd say get a cf card reader, but they seem to be discontinued. Yes you can work with floppies but there are limitations of course. I've used AKAI instruments that just about stretch the memory limits of the ASR (16mb). You can't even split those up into floppies even if you wanted to.

Regarding directories - I always prefer using macros. An excellent (and simple) feature

So I reckon you may want to check out that zip drive option, and then a copy of Translator (and a possible 2nd drive) if you're planning to transfer stuff to and from PC. Hope that helps.

Sure I know the ASR doesnt work with .wavs, I was thinking more of conversion so will take a look at Translator.

Im working with a SCSI CD-Rom from the ASR so Im hoping to convert some stuff and burn to CD-R.

May be tempted to cop a SCSI hard-drive too, but Im gonna try and wrap my head around this old school machine first.

I understand the ASR will load Akai S1000/ 1100 programs, something it has in common with my MPC4000.

Anyone worked with Akai programs on the ASR? Good results or a waste of time??

If your gonna go the Zipdrive route, get an usb version for your computer. works great with translator.
I also have an usb cardreader to read the cf cards from my asr (backup)
