I went through a learning phase in the beginning and I can honestly say that listening to DJ Shadow and DJ Krush really helped me understand many things.

Not just listening, understanding, dissecting, picking apart certain thinkgs you hear and recreate
them on your machine. THEN you get a better feel for how things were done and the many way to do 1 thing you hear.

You learn your machine that way also.

For example, you can do oneshot echo without an echo effect. No I won't post an example, think about.

I'd personally say that listening to ANYTHING that's dope and different can help you...as long as you understand what it is that makes it dope and different. But everyone is different in terms of what motivates or helps them I guess.
