Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By phillyone Sun Aug 22, 2004 10:35 pm
this is mostly for cats the have MPC2000 + XP (PC)... because we know the wav-zip-MPC 2000 thing is a pain in the ass..

I believe it was Binger0 that offered this method.....

any body care to co-sign or offer a better way

and of course MPC editor..........

yeah man just use a parrallel drive for your pc and a scsi or scsi internal drive for your mpc. Then sample with a waveeditor like wavelab or soundforge. then cut in recycle then make ur programs with the editor. all u do is export it to the .zip and load up the program. then u have a whole kit ready to rock. in half the time it takes me too loop and cut and eq, effect, process, then it would on the mpc and hardware.

Then you have a big sorting out problem called SCSI. SCSI is a pain in the f*ken a*s, unless you know someone who has done it I wouldnt go near it. Already have and spent a lot of time and money which has achieved nothing - go the ZIP drives, easy ,safe, harddisks - no bullsh*t cause your sh*t is on disc man.

thats the method - tried and true.

i've heard reports of people plugging one end of their scsi zip into the mpc and one end into their pc, and supposedly there are ways to get things to recognize each other in this way, and i swear someone on a mailing list was saying it works fine for them, but apparently (and this is more or less badly translated hearsay from my programmer roomate) the insurmountable problem comes when the pc and the mpc try to access the scsi chain at the same time. then you get errors, deletions, equipment frying . . . who knows? and you might get a false sense of security when they dont happen to be sending signals at the same time.

cause one of the things about scsi is its fairly resilient even when hooked up wrong. when i first chained my zip drive and my little scsi hardrive into my mpc sometimes things would load, sometimes they wouldn't. it turned out i was reading the termination settings backward and i had the chain set exactly the opposite way it should have been. but it still managed to work about 75 percent of the time! the analogy i can make sense of is that its always transmitting the correct information, but if its not hooked up right the information can bounce back and garble up the next bit of information or clog up the pipe or whatever.

so the deal is the two zip method. everyone uses it. its cheap. and theres no chance of it frying your gear in normal operation. but hey, i'm still hoping to find a better way myself so the question stands . . .

What we all really want is a cable that would connect the MPC to the computer, & a program that can make the MPC read from & save to the computer the way it does with a scsi zip, HD, CD ROM etc. If this was easy I think it would exist by now. If anyone is developing such a thing they also face the problem of what sort of hardware connections & adaptors would connect the MPC & modern computer. I know old Macs came with SCSI ports but new ones don't. Was SCSI ever standard on PCs? Whatever, nobody is likely to develop something just for people who use old Macs.

my roomate was saying that youd need access to akais source code and it would still take a whole helluva lot of work. theres no way akais going to try and mess with it (especially the "obsolete" 2k - dammit i'd be happy if they even just put folder support on the 2k os) and theres no way were getting the source code. reverse engineering it would be like someones life work....

Yeah, USB with the 1k - bastards. Why didnt they think of that when the 2k came out - USB was out by then wasnt it? Or am I wrong here? Maybe they just wanted to keep it old school and customise it for massive studios - not for the little homeboy 'beat maker' straight off the streetz....
who cares, my USB ZIP arrives soon.

esko scsi is pretty simple. im sayin one drive scsi for the mpc and another drive, parallel, printer port type, one. 2 drives. scsi is easy u turn on the zip then the mpc. then find the id u need in the load screen.
