What type of zip is it? Is it the same SCSI one you use on your MPC? If so, is it definately a SCSI port on your computer? Unless it is an old Mac you might be trying to connect to a parallel port.

If it is the same zip drive you use on your MPC make sure the MPC is always switched off when you a connecting & disconnecting it.

i have a iomega external zip. i have the right cable for the mpc2kxl.(its a 25 pin male fromzip to 50pin male to mpc) works good with my mpc. now, i have another cable for file transfer (its a 25 pin male to 25 pin male) if i want to, lets say use mpceditor on my comp, how do i hook my external zip up to the comp to save on zip disks? there are two different outs on the back of the zip? does it matter wich one i hook one end of the cable up to? and only one on the comp.....it is a comp bought no longer than 6 months ago. do i need software for the comp to recognize the external drive? how does everyone else use zips for comps and mpc?

I've a bad feeling the connector on the back of your computer will be a parallel port, not SCSI which is what the MPC & zip use.

If you know it is SCSI have a look on http://www.iomega.com for drivers to download.

Have you got USB ports on the computer? If you connect a USB zip it should show up immediatly. That might be your solution.... get a USB zip drive & swap disks between the two zips. That way you keep the SCSI one attached to the MPC & don't risk doing any damage by constantly have to disconnect it.

do i really need 2 zips though.....im pretty sure i can just download a driver from iomega cuz its ok if its a parallel port

If the external you're using hooks up to the MPC as a SCSI unit, you'll need a SCSI card in your PC to hook it up to your PC. Even though it has the 25 pins on it, it still needs a SCSI card to use it. I myself have the External Parallel to use on my PC. It looks just like yours, except it's Parallel, not SCSI. If that makes sense.

If you can get one, get an internal IDE zip (100, 250, whatever you have), it's much easier that switching the drives around. An external USB wouldn't be bad either.

I think this was a good reason for USB being invented.... because SCSI & Parallel ports look the same but work differently.

If your computer has USB ports you should weigh up the price of getting a SCSI card for it against getting an external USB zip drive or a parallel one that will work on that multi pin socket, or an internal one.

Believe me, I think you will find swapping a disk between two different zip drives so much easier than disconnecting it & reconnecting one drive between two machines.....plus you've got the risk of blowing the SCSI fuse in your MPC....

Go to www.scsiforsamplers.com My man J has all of the cables, zip's, HD, and CD Drives for all MPC's and can hook you up. I had a problem with my zip/MPC/PC and he set me straight!! My man is the deal for real!

You don't need anything else because you aren't hooking that one up to the MPC. The USB drive stays permanently on the computer & the SCSI drive stays permanently on the MPC. You just swap the same disks between the two drives.
