so far what new features do we have:
-turning the pads into a light up step sequencer (new layout for the 16 beat step sequencer, but not really anything new... cool none the less)

One thing that comes to mind is the number of effects you can use. When I tested the MPC1000 I found that very limited.

The MPC1000 has two stereo effects and one master effect.

So if I understand correctly that's only three effects you can use.

I don't know how many effects you can use with the MPC2500 and MPC5000, but with Maschine you can use two effects on each sound, two effects on each group of sounds and two effects on the master. And unlike the MPC1000 these two effects can be different on each sound, group and master. For example you can choose EQ and REVERB on sound 1 and LOFI and COMPRESSOR on sound 2 etc.

co-sign.

If you aren't getting paid by Native Instruments then you should be and I am deadly serious.

There are lots of things I like about this thing. A few I don't.

At the moment it is sitting in it's box as my main computer is still Running Tiger OS and I have a number of projects to finish before I even contemplate upgrading and I want to use it with leopard as the updates that I like (beta 1.5) only work with leopard or above.

I can't believe they dropped support for Tiger OS in the year of the Tiger. The irony.

Anyhow one question, how can I browse my own samples without use of the mouse?

I have only been able to add my samples as a library and then they are all out of their well ordered folders. Am I missing something?

The only way to "demo" it is to play with one in real life, like at Guitar Center. You won't get what it's about at all from downloading the software only as a demo. NI's official videos give you a pretty good idea though if you haven't watched them already.

Askia Shaheed wrote:However, DAW's like Cubase and Logic have built-in samplers and groove production tools that are equal or more powerful than Machine.

So the question is why do you need Maschine if you have a major DAW? Or, what are the Pros and Cons of using Maschine vs MPC with your DAW?

Man, do you just selectively ignore to read what you don't want to hear or something? Your questions have already been answered here at length. But since you're asking again, you're obviously still missing the point and perhaps just taking the piss. I thought you said yours arrived the other day?

If you are going to continue to hype this product, please give some specifics on why it is better? We already got the point that its hardware controls nearly all the functions in the software. And my questions have not been answered at length. Also, I didn't say mine arrived the other day. Go back and re-read. But when I do sit down with it, believe I will give detailed information from an MPC-user (or fanatic's) perspective (owned ever model MPC with the exception of the 60 and 500).

Man - this thread still going huh?

Everything past page 3 is just the same stuff going round and round and round.........

"Maschine is great"

"No it isn't"

"yes it is"

"why is it?"

"why isn't it?"

yada yada yada.....

You need to tag them. It's a bit awkward to do though. Many have requested a more userfriendly way.

"IRONY "...(from the oxford english dictionary)
In literary terms irony (also called dramatic irony or tragic irony) is a technique, originally used in Greek tragedy, by which the full significance of a character's words or actions is clear to the audience or reader although unknown to the character.

First you have to import your sounds to the Maschine library and tag them:
Hold the NAVIGATE button and push the 5th button (which should say Browser in the right screen on the hardware) to open the browser. You'll see a tab in the browser on the software screen called LIB (library) and DISK. Click on DISK to go to where you samples are (you can also set folders here as favorites which are like bookmarks if you always organize your folders in the same spot). Then select your samples/folder of samples then click IMPORT. (Note: The samples don't get moved when you import, they stay in the original location.) Now you can go to the LIB tab to find your samples you just added (you can select multiple) and click EDIT and tag (existing or create new) your samples.

Now you can browse your samples without using your mouse:
Just press BROWSE on the hardware and scroll through the tags to find the sample you want.

mr_debauch wrote:so far what new features do we have:

That in itself is nothing new if you've used Electribes. What is new about Maschine's step sequencer is that you can change the step resolution as you work on your beat and the LED visual feedback on the 16 pads will expand to those resolutions which you can navigate all on the hardware.

And as already mentioned by myself and others in this thread, it's not about new or exclusive features that makes Maschine so great. It's the whole concept on how it works that allows for more efficient and productive workflow and the convenience of having all your sound available all the time and the tight fast integration with a DAW.

Some highlights of Maschine's features:
- It's the first ever hybrid beat machine combining the feel and workflow of standalone hardware with the power and flexibility of computer software.
- As I mention often, no need to look at the computer screen or use a mouse if you don't want to. You can just use the hardware controller for pretty much everything.
- MPC-like hardware-oriented machine that can integrate with a DAW as a plugin.
- You can drag and drop your pattern to your DAW as audio or midi clip.
- Way more effects than standalone hardware: Each sound has two insert effects, each group has two insert effects, and there are two master insert effects.
- Hands on, MPC style gear without limitations of on-board memory like 128MB/512MB, which means you can access ALL of your sounds in the same environment. You can’t do that with a MPC.
- Quickly accessible mute and solo of sounds and groups of sounds well-suited for live performance much like Electribe and RM1X.
- NI Kore-style browser with tags to makes navigating through tons of sounds all from the hardware very fast, easy and customizable. Easy to import sounds and create your own tags. Browse sounds/projects/kits/patterns all from the hardware without using the mouse.
- A very useful sound library at your finger tips with nice kits, strings, keys, bass...etc.
- Each sound can be a single wave or a multi sampled instrument like pianos, strings, synths, etc
- You can change the pitch of my samples on the fly. No need to process and wait for it, just turn the knob.
- Easy, hands-on automation of almost every parameter.
- You change the bit rate of your samples on the fly, plus you have normal filters on each sound.
- Quicker to chop samples: You can copy and paste them by hitting a pad, then duplicate, then pressing another pad, very quick.
- Super easy to set the start end points on samples for old school style chopping, or you can use auto chop.
- MPC program import and vintage sample mode that emulates MPC60/SP1200.
- When you sample/resample, you can have it stop recording automatically in sync with the tempo for however many bars of your choice.
- Little touches like being able to preview slices and zooming into waveforms all from the hardware.
- It makes for an excellent midi controller for DAW and plugins thanks to the 2 LCD displays and an intuitive template editor.
- It has a step parameter lock feature similar to Elektron MachineDrum.
- It can act as a hardware multi-fx step sequencer for external or internal audio signals.

irony: "a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result."

That definition seems a little more pertinent and fitting.

Lol I just figured that out like an hour ago because of the controller. I'm going to peep it out at GC next time I go with in the next few weeks.

Some highlights of Maschine's features:

- Roland MV series with the external monitor and mouse was the first to expand on the idea of an MPC with the power of a DAW. Non-beat machine products like Motif XS workstation is a powerful combination when paired with Cubase. In fact the Motif XS saves its files in Cubase format. N.I. gets props but they still have significant room for improvement
- You can use Maschine's hardware without the mouse, but like the MV, Fantom G, and software DAWs, many features are easier accessed using a mouse.
- You can't use an MPC as a plugin, but you can certainly sequence plug-in instruments using an MPC. The MPCs sequencer/swing is still the standard to emulate. And if you don't want to turn on your computer, it is still pretty much a standalone unit. If a sampling drum machine comes along that can do both (Motif XS comes close), than that would be the hottest toy on the market.
- MPCs can connect to PCs via USB. You can drag and drop MPC sequences and audio into the DAW of your choice.
- Since Maschine is not actually standalone hardware and the fact that any DAW has far superior and flexible effects, it is pointless to highlight that. Since you are already on a computer, why not just use the best effects available?
- MPCs have a memory of 16 MB-512 MBs and are still used today. The fact that they are powerful MIDI sequencers that can sequence the most powerful software synths and instruments available makes this a non-issue. Logic and an MPC...heaven....all your sounds in a single environment if you choose. But this is a silly point for musicians that incorporate real instruments in their production. An MPC is just another instrument.
- The latest MPCs were specifically engineered for improved live performances.
- If users want a Kore-style browser, they could just use Kore. Again, features like this are easier accessed with a mouse (see MV-8800) or any DAW.
- Sound libraries are plentiful these days. The key for NI is to keep improving Maschine so it can import the standard sample formats. Numerous software samplers have equal or better libraries.
- MPC 4000 and 5000 does nicely with on board multi-samples. But I prefer using an MPC with software specifically designed for this (Kontakt, Halion, EXS, etc)
- Any MPC can change the pitch of a sample immediately. Every software DAW can do this.
- MPC 5000 can automate nearly everything that someone would want to automate. There are also numerous controllers that can do the same thing with a DAW.
- Every MPC has filters. If your are sequencing software instruments, you can use the filters in that software or your DAW. DAws are extremely powerful when it comes to manipulating sound.
- Between the JJ OS and Akai's MPC 5000s OS, there are some amazing things that can be done with chopping samples. Every DAW on the market has this feature as well.
- Old school style chopping and editing samples is an MPC forte but of course you can do the same with just about any software.
- Battery has MPC program import. Since most software samplers can read MPC sample files, program import is not a significant feature. Now if Maschine (or any DAW) can read MPC projects, I am all ears. As far as emulating MPC 60/SP1200...not really the holly grail people around the forums make them out to be.
- When sampling/resampling, the last thing on my mind is having the recording stop on a certain bar especially when I enjoy editing and chopping all my samples.
- JJ OS non-destructive chop and zooming is the best thing going right now. NI should follow this lead. MPCs using non-JJ OS can do similar but not exactly the samething but the end results are still impressive
- Maschine is no better a MIDI controller than any other on the market when not being used with Maschine software. MPC 5000 and 2500 as well as any MPD are great MIDI controllers. Maschine's two LCDs are not that impressive. One big LCD would have been just as nice or nicer. An adjustable LCD would be more impressive.
- Step parameter lock? Sounds boring. How's grid editing/recording compared to the latest MPCs?
- Multi-effect step sequencer? I am falling asleep. Nothing else to copy from the Maschine product description?

I am just having fun so don't take this too seriously. Keep on trying to sell the Maschine with all its pro's....
